'Typical No. 9' - Xabi Alonso sets high expectations for Gonzalo Garcia as Real Madrid boss compares youngster to legend Raul after Club World Cup showing

Garcia stood out during Madrid’s 3-0 win over Red Bull Salzburg at the Club World Cup, earning high praise from head coach Alonso. The 20-year-old forward showed composure and intelligent movement, drawing comparisons to club legend Raul. Alonso said the performance came as no surprise given Garcia's consistent form at Castilla.

Los Blancos boast immense attacking talent, including Vinicius Jr. and Kylian Mbappe, but Alonso emphasised team unity over individual roles. He believes Garcia can blend perfectly with the rest of the squad, adding another valuable option to Madrid’s forward line. The coach also praised the team’s defensive work rate, highlighting the balance he’s trying to build.

Alonso spoke to the media after the game and praised Garcia's performance, saying: "I had no doubts about Gonzalo. What he's doing isn't a surprise. He's done it many times at Castilla. At least for him. He's the typical number nine, who knows how to wait for his opportunity, who moves well. I'm very happy for him. He has Raul qualities in his movements. There are no decisions regarding the start of next season."

Madrid face Juventus next in the round of 16 of the Club World Cup. While Alonso hasn’t confirmed Garcia’s place in next season’s squad, the young striker’s form is making a strong case. His performances could earn him more minutes and a more defined role under Alonso moving forward.
