'Of course it hurts!' - Trent Alexander-Arnold breaks silence on vile abuse following controversial Liverpool exit to Real Madrid

The transition from local hero to persona non grata was swift for Alexander-Arnold, who saw his mural near Anfield defaced with the word "rat" following his decision to join Real Madrid. Returning to his former home for a Champions League clash last November, the right-back was met with a chorus of boos. Speaking to The Mirror about the fallout, the 27-year-old admitted the situation has been deeply personal.

"Abuse online and threats made via social DMs or in other ways are a sad part of life in 2026 if you’re in the public eye and doing things that create a lot of attention," he explained. "I choose to keep those things away from me because they don’t feel real."

He added: "Going back to Liverpool after everything that’s happened it was on my mind. "If I'm honest, if something affects me and upsets me, it shows in my family as well. They are in it with me…we’re together."

Despite the vile nature of some messages, the defender insists he understands why the Liverpool faithful felt betrayed by his decision to leave on a free transfer. The move ended a 20-year journey that began in the club's academy, and the sudden nature of his exit left a bitter taste for many.

"I can rationalise that by knowing it’s not representative of a football club I love, LFC, and it’s not representative of my home city," Alexander-Arnold continued. "The booing and disappointment from Liverpool supporters is something I’m absolutely able to shoulder. I can understand it, in my own way.

"I heard a lot during that period that Liverpool fans didn’t want to be told how to feel or think, and I agree. But I hope one day there’ll be a degree of understanding about the decisions I wanted to make around my own life.

"It hurts because of how much I’ve put into the club over the course of 20 years and the sacrifices I made for the club during that period. So of course it hurts, but I understand the disappointment. I even understand anger expressed through booing."

Life at Real Madrid has not gone entirely to plan for the Englishman, adding further scrutiny to his controversial exit. Last season, he managed just 14 starts in La Liga and failed to find the back of the net in any competition, marking the first time he has gone a full season without scoring since his breakout campaign in 2016-17.

A summer of upheaval at the Bernabeu has only compounded his misery. Following Jose Mourinho's sensational return to the dugout, Los Blancos swooped to sign powerhouse right-back Denzel Dumfries from Inter. The Dutchman's arrival immediately pushed Alexander-Arnold down the pecking order, leaving his first-team prospects looking bleaker than ever.

Mourinho’s preference for his new recruit was evident on the opening match of the 2026-27 campaign. Dumfries was thrown straight into the starting XI ahead of the former Liverpool star, restricting Alexander-Arnold to a mere 10-minute cameo in a dramatic 2-1 victory over Espanyol.

Despite the fractious relationship with a section of the fanbase, Alexander-Arnold refuses to sever his ties with the Reds. He confirmed that he remains an avid follower of the club’s progress, fueling inevitable speculation that he could one day return to the club where he made his name.

"I still watch every [Liverpool] game. I support them. I want to see them do well," Alexander-Arnold revealed. "I enjoy watching them, and there will always be a place in my heart for Liverpool, no matter what. It is home to me. It’s the place that gave me the opportunities to go and do what I’ve done, and I will always love it. It’s always a place that I’ll call home."
