  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Manchester United striker Yorke claimed Carragher "stirred up" Liverpool fans by sympathising with those who feel let down by Alexander-Arnold's decision to leave Anfield before an anticipated switch to Real Madrid. The England right-back's contract expires this summer and he recently confirmed he would leave at the end of the season, with supporters letting their feelings known during Sunday's 2-2 draw with Arsenal.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Alexander-Arnold will leave Liverpool with a Champions League, two Premier Leagues and a smattering of other cup triumphs to his name, having played a vital role in the club's resurgence over the past seven years or so. However, supporters reacted with jeers and chanted for Conor Bradley and Steven Gerrard when Alexander-Arnold was introduced from the bench against the Gunners. Now, Yorke has brutally claimed Carragher wouldn't understand the temptation of joining a club like Madrid and urged supporters to understand the defender's desire to try something new.

  • WHAT YORKE SAID

Yorke told Poker Scout: "I can see why fans are disappointed, but Trent Alexander-Arnold has been a great servant to the club, people seem to have forgotten that. We know how football works. When it comes to Jamie Carragher, he has his views, but I think sometimes he can get it wrong. I think he has stirred things up with Liverpool fans.

"Had Real Madrid come in for Carragher, who knows what would've happened. Obviously we know he wasn't in the same bracket of player, even though he was a one-club man. We all know the level he was at. But after 20 years, why can't Alexander-Arnold go and find a new challenge? Why can't he go to Real Madrid and improve himself as a player with more experience? When players go the other way it's never a problem, that's what I don't understand."

WHAT NEXT FOR ALEXANDER-ARNOLD AND LIVERPOOL?

Bradley started ahead of Alexander-Arnold on Sunday and the England star may have to sit on the bench again when Liverpool take on Brighton on Monday night.
