'Spiderman it is then!' - Man Utd fans left disappointed by 'ugly' official plans for 100,000-capacity new stadium with Old Trafford set to be demolished

As per The Telegraph, United are planning to demolish Old Trafford as the INEOS group are all set to build a new 100,000-capacity home venue, which according to Sir Jim Ratcliffe will be the "world's greatest football stadium". The club released a promo video of the new ground on Tuesday morning, with club legend Gary Neville lending his voice to the two-minute-long clip. In the caption, the club wrote: "This is your future. Your home. Your United."

The fans, however, were left disappointed with the official plans as they expressed their frustration on social media.

An X handle named Priest wrote: "Spider-Man it is then."

NivorYanited added: "This is so ugly omg."

@Ldff777 also pointed to the Spiderman-esque theme: "The cobweb stadium."

Kallum said of the designs: "This is embarrassing."

Meanwhile, Patrik Lavo called the new venue a 'circus' as he wrote: "We want Old Trafford… not a circus stadium…"

After unveiling the plans at the London offices of architecture firm Foster + Partners, INEOS chairman and Man Utd part-owner Ratcliffe said: "Today marks the start of an incredibly exciting journey to the delivery of what will be the world’s greatest football stadium, at the centre of a regenerated Old Trafford.

"Our current stadium has served us brilliantly for the past 115 years, but it has fallen behind the best arenas in world sport. By building next to the existing site, we will be able to preserve the essence of Old Trafford, while creating a truly state-of-the-art stadium that transforms the fan experience only footsteps from our historic home. Just as important is the opportunity for a new stadium to be the catalyst for social and economic renewal of the Old Trafford area, creating jobs and investment not just during the construction phase but on a lasting basis when the stadium district is complete."

He added: "The Government has identified infrastructure investment as a strategic priority, particularly in the north of England, and we are proud to be supporting that mission with this project of national, as well as local, significance."

Legendary former Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson backed the new project as he added: "Manchester United should always strive for the best in everything it does, on and off the pitch, and that includes the stadium we play in. Old Trafford holds so many special memories for me personally, but we must be brave and seize this opportunity to build a new home, fit for the future, where new history can be made."

The club will spend close to £2 billion on their ambitious project instead of redeveloping the existing Old Trafford venue. The Telegraph had earlier reported that Ratcliffe wants to build the 'Wembley of North' as he believes the project offers a once-in-a-century opportunity to the club. The new home ground will be built on the land adjacent to Old Trafford.
