'That made it so much more special' - USWNT wonderkid Lily Yohannes reflects on debut goal as Emma Hayes' team beat South Korea

At 16 years old, Lily Yohannes became the third-youngest player to score for the USWNT, and she did so on her debut against South Korea.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    The Ajax wonderkid made her debut for the USWNT as they won 3-0 against South Korea in a friendly on Tuesday night, giving Emma Hayes two victories in as many games with the Americans. After the game, Yohannes exclaimed that her national team debut couldn't have gone by nearly as well without the goal.

    Speaking to the media, the 16-year-old said: "It's a dream come true really. I played this scenario out in my head, like, how many times before this game. Just having the idea of coming on and scoring. That was just really amazing. The support from teammates, all running up to me, that made it so much more special."

    Crystal Dunn scored in the 13th minute, and Sophia Smith extended the lead in the 67th minute. Yohannes replaced Korbin Albert five minutes after Smith's goal, and she didn't take long to break the mark. Ten minutes after coming on as a substitute, Yohannes scored her first goal for the USWNT, giving them a 3-0 lead.

    The 16-year-old impressed for Hayes' side and it is possible that she could potentially get the call-up for the 2024 Paris Olympics as they look to further improve their record in the tournament.
