Rob McElhenney rides emotional rollercoaster in Wrexham away end as Hollywood actor joins travelling fans to see Red Dragons take important step towards promotion

The Hollywood actor made a point of heading over to the UK for a vital fixture in the Red Dragons’ ongoing efforts to secure a historic third successive promotion. He did not have fellow co-owner Ryan Reynolds by his side.

There were, however, plenty of Wrexham supporters ready to ride an emotional rollercoaster with the ‘It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’ star. The Welsh outfit knew that they could not afford any slip-ups during a visit to Bloomfield Road.

It took over an hour for the deadlock to be broken against Blackpool, as McElhenney was left with his head in hands at times, but James McClean and Ollie Rathbone both netted in the space of three second-half minutes to put Wrexham in control.

The hosts did grab a stoppage-time consolation, which added to the sense of drama, but McElhenney and Co were left celebrating three priceless points at the final whistle. The most famous face in the crowd has shared a collection of images that highlight the “play in 3 acts” that he experienced by the seaside in Lancashire.

Victory for Wrexham, coupled with Wycombe’s shock defeat at home to Charlton, has pushed Phil Parkinson’s side back into second place in the third tier table. They have just two games left in which to wrap up automatic promotion - with the first of those set to see them play host to in-form Charlton on Saturday.
