  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Red Devils are in the midst of a dismal season that has already seen manager Erik ten Hag fired and Ruben Amorim appointed as his replacement. Yet United have continued to struggle on the pitch and sit down in 12th place currently. There's been plenty of criticism of the club in the media and Rio Ferdinand has now revealed that he regularly rips his former team apart in a WhatsApp group that contains a host of legends, including Wayne Rooney and current squad member Jonny Evans.

    WHAT FERDINAND SAID

The former defender revealed the details of the group on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand Presents, with Man Utd and England women's star Ella Toone: "Wazza was the last person who spoke in there. It's called 'Band of Brothers'. I can't tell you the next bit, it won't make the cut. It's just hammering the United team. Look, lads are just hammering them through the game. 'He's not good enough'. I love it. It just keeps me connected to the lads. You've got the younger lads like Tom Cleverley, Danny Welbeck, and then there's Nani and Anderson. You know who joined recently? Edwin van der Sar. I think he's going to delete himself soon because the chat ain't for him. I don't think he knows how to send gifs. Who else is in there? Jonny Evans is in there, who's currently playing. Some of the stuff that goes on... Patrice Evra gets mullered, hammered all the time. We hammer each other."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Evans played alongside Rooney and Ferdinand at United, winning Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League titles, between 2006 and 2015. He then made a shock return to the club in 2023 at the age of 35 as something of a stop-gap but was offered a new one-year deal the following summer after playing 30 times. In the meantime, Manchester United have invested heavily in defensive acquisitions such as Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt, but both players are still yet to consistently impress since arriving at Old Trafford.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAN UTD

Manchester United have enjoyed wins over Rangers and Fulham in their last two games to quieten the critics somewhat. Another victory on Thursday over FCSB in the Europa League will secure a place in the next round of the Europa League.
