  • Gerrard signed new contract this week
  • Ettifaq in dismal form
  • Salary has taken a major bump
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Gerrard signed a new contract earlier this week, despite a dismal run of form that has seen Ettifaq go nine games without a win, and the loss of Jordan Henderson, who terminated his contract and joined Ajax. The club are currently eighth in the Saudi Pro League, 28 points behind leaders Al-Hilal. However, TalkSPORTreports that Gerrard's new deal, which is a two-year extension, is worth a staggering £15m ($19m) per year.

L'Equipe published a list of managerial salaries in March of last year, ranking Guardiola's salary at £19m ($24m) and Klopp's also at £15m. Gerrard would be the fourth-highest paid manager in the world according to that list, with Diego Simeone on top with his £30m ($38m) yearly Atletico salary.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Gerrard was once touted as a future Liverpool manager but his form as a coach in recent years has seen his stock fall dramatically. Not only has he flattered to deceive at Ettifaq so far, he also left Aston Villa with the club in freefall. They were sat above the relegation zone only on goal difference at the time of his sacking; under Unai Emery, they now sit third, just two points behind leaders Liverpool.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Gerrard did have success at Rangers, his first managerial job, winning the Scottish Premiership in 2020/21, although that is the only trophy of his coaching career thus far. He used that success to earn the Villa job, although that did not exactly pan out.

    WHAT NEXT FOR GERRARD?

The Saudi Pro League is currently paused while the AFC Asian Cup is being played. Ettifaq are next in action on February 15, against Al-Khaleej.
