Real Madrid legend's professionalism questioned by Lionel Messi's boyhood club Newell's Old Boys in brutal statement as $2m transfer to Liga MX giants Pumas confirmed

In a brutal statement, Newell's announced the departure of Navas, who has joined Liga MX giants Pumas. The Argentine side, who had Lionel Messi on their books as an academy star before his move to Barcelona, questioned the veteran goalkeeper's professionalism and commitment, while also confirming that they will receive compensation package worth $1.9 million plus an additional $100,000 in variables from Pumas, taking the total sum to $2m.

The official statement from the club read: "Club Atletico Newell's Old Boys informs its members, supporters, and fans that the footballer Keylor Navas is no longer part of the professional football squad and will continue his career with Pumas of Mexico. This decision has been made based on the conviction to uphold a collective project where commitment, professionalism, and respect for the club’s values are non-negotiable pillars. We firmly believe that to achieve our sporting and human objectives, it is essential that every member moves in the same direction, always prioritising the collective over the individual. Our path is clear: unity, effort, and belonging. Under these values, we will continue working day by day to honour the jersey and the passion of our people. The agreement will result in Club Atlético Newell's Old Boys receiving financial compensation valued at US$1,900,000, plus US$100,000 in variables to be covered by Pumas, reaching a total of US$2,000,000."

The former Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper, who won numerous major titles in Europe, including three Champions League trophies, has penned a one-year deal with Pumas. Navas joined Newell's during the January transfer window as a free agent from PSG and appeared in 16 matches for the club.

The 38-year-old goalkeeper could make his debut for his new club in a Liga MX clash this Friday as Pumas take on Queretaro away from home.
