  • WHAT HAPPENED?

According to The Athletic, Hojlund was determined to stay at United and fight for his place in the starting lineup under Amorim, while the club were negotiating a move with Napoli. He reluctantly flew to Italy on Sunday for medical, despite not fully approving of the deal.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Eventually, Hojlund penned a season-long loan deal with the Italian champions, who also have a conditional obligation to buy the striker next summer for €44 million (£38m/$51m). Once the Denmark international realised that his Old Trafford dream was over only after two seasons, the 22-year-old was left "heartbroken", with The Athletic also claiming that he believes he is better than the Red Devils' new No.9, Sesko. He wanted to prove his worth to Amorim and was ready to compete with the Slovenian forward.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Hojlund was deemed surplus to requirements at United after being left out of the squad for their opening three Premier League fixtures. The 22-year-old had an underwhelming 2024-25 campaign, where he scored 10 goals in 52 appearances in all competitions.

    WHAT NEXT FOR HOJLUND?

With Romelu Lukaku out of action with an injury, Hojlund is likely to be incorporated in Napoli's starting lineup and he could make his debut for the club on September 13 as Antonio Conte's side take on Fiorentina in Serie A.
