PSG Player of the Season 2023-24 power rankings: Goal-machine Kylian Mbappe regains No.1 spot after finding his feet in Luis Enrique's new-look side

It was a ropey start to the season for Paris Saint-Germain. A long summer ended with a dozen new signings, and the departures of both Lionel Messi and Neymar. Everything seemed rushed and sort of thrown together. But now things have settled, a team has emerged.

The Parisians are comfortably top of Ligue 1, all-but through to the last 16 of the Champions League, and finding form ahead of what will be a crucial few months. Manager Luis Enrique has always insisted this will be a project, and it's chugging along nicely — with their star man Kylian Mbappe at the forefront of it all.

GOALhas rated every PSG player's performance so far this season to figure out who should be the frontrunners for the club's Player of the Season award...

Previous update: November 3, 2023.

  • Cher Ndour PSG 2023-24Getty Images

    22Cher Ndour (N/A) ↔️

Perhaps the least heralded of PSG's summer incomings, teenager Ndour has played sparingly this season, and it remains puzzling that he didn't leave on loan.

  • Hugo-Ekitike(C)Getty Images

    21Hugo Ekitike (N/A) ↔️

Perhaps the biggest victim of Mbappe's decision to stay in Paris, Ekitike hasn't been involved in a game since the opening day of the campaign. It's difficult to see that changing, especially given the depth PSG have brought in up front.

  • Carlos Soler 2023Getty Images

    20Carlos Soler (4/10) ⬇️

Luis, Carlos is not a left-back. The Spanish manager has deployed the attacking midfielder as a defender on a handful of occasions this season, and he has been exploited at the back every time. And when afforded the opportunity to impress going the other way, he hasn't set the world alight, either.

  • Ousmane Dembele PSG 2023-24Getty

    19Ousmane Dembele (5.5/10) ⬇️

Finally, signs of life! One of the Parisians' big-money signings this summer, Dembele endured a mixed start to life in the French capital. He developed an understanding with Kylian Mbappe and Randal Kolo Muani, but wastefulness in the final third saw old criticisms return. Recent improvements have given reason for hope, though. PSG will hope it's not another false dawn.

  • 20230827_Donnarumma_Mbappe(C)Getty images

    18Gianluigi Donnarumma (5/10) ⬇️

Oh no, Gigio. Donnarumma started the season well, but has endured a miserable month, making constant mistakes before earning himself a stupid sending off in the Parisians' last Ligue 1 fixture. He is too good of a shot-stopper to let go, but is he the right man for the job in the years to come?

  • Randal Kolo Muani Goncalo Ramos PSG 2023-24Getty

    17Goncalo Ramos (5.5/10) ↔️

Playing time will be hard to come by in the PSG front line, and so far, Ramos hasn't quite shown enough to be worthy of it every week. He bagged two against Marseille — a handy show of what he might be able to do but he hasn't made much of an impact since. Not a waste of money, but Ramos has done little to justify his price tag.

  • Randal Kolo Muani PSG 2023-24Getty

    16Randal Kolo Muani (5.5/10) ⬇️

Kolo Muani hit the ground running, scoring one and assisting two in his first 117 minutes at the club. Since then, though, he's looked an awkward fit. Although he seems to be above Ramos in the pecking order, the Frenchman hasn't exactly made the spot his own. More to come, Enrique will hope.

  • Denzel Dumfries Fabian Ruiz PSG Inter Friendly 01082023Getty

    15Fabian Ruiz (5.5/10) ↔️

There was an assumption that a Spanish manager might get the best out of the Spain midfielder whose PSG career is yet to take off, and there have been brief suggestions that Enrique can indeed unlock the former Napoli man. Ruiz has been excellent in short bursts, providing creativity and drive from midfield, but his defensive work can be questioned.

  • Nordi Mukiele PSG 112023Getty

    14Nordi Mukiele (6/10) ⬆️

Mukiele has been a reliable deputy across the backline in an impressive return from a long-term muscle injury. He was a stalwart for the first half of the 2022-23 season. Enrique will hope he can stay fit and in form.

  • Danilo Pereira 2023-24

    13Danilo Pereira (6/10) ⬆️

Danilo has lost his starting spot this year, thanks to the arrivals of Manuel Ugarte and Milan Skriniar. But he can still be a reliable back-up either in defensive midfield or at centre-back — something he has shown with Marquinhos out. Not a game-changing talent, but he's always handy.

  • Bradley Barcola PSG Marseille Ligue 1 24092023Getty

    12Bradley Barcola (6/10) ⬆️

Barcola was a puzzling signing when the Parisians bought him from Lyon at the end of the transfer window. PSG, after all, had depth in the wide areas, and didn't really need another attacking player. But he has shown promise in short bursts, and could be in for some more playing time should the rest of the Parisian front line continue to struggle.

  • Lucas Hernandez - PSG 2023Getty

    11Lucas Hernandez (6.5/10) ⬇️

Hernandez is what he is: a solid centre-back, asked to play on the left who offers little going forward. This is not a Guardiola-esque inverted full-back. He is not the Parisian answer to John Stones. Rather, he covers the space behind Mbappe, and makes sure that PSG keep it tight on the left. Unspectacular, but effective.

  • Arnau Tenas PSG Le HavreGetty

    10Arnau Tenas (7/10) 🌟

Tenas might just have made himself PSG's goalkeeper of the future. It's easy to be reactionary, but Tenas was immensely impressive when replacing Donnarumma against Le Havre, and will now have two more fixtures to stake his claim for the starting job.

  • Lee Kang-in PSG 2023-24Getty Images

    9Lee Kang-in (7/10) ⬆️

Among the more surprising signings of PSG's turbulent summer, the attacking midfielder has impressed with his energy and quality on the ball. He's probably being used incorrectly, though. Lee was a natural attacking midfielder, and the focal point for Mallorca last year. For PSG, he is stuck in a box-to-box role or thrown out wide. Still, with five straight starts to his name, Lee seems to have earned the manager's trust.

  • Marco Asensio PSG 2023-24Getty

    8Marco Asensio (7/10) ⬇️

Not for the first time, Luis Enrique has been adamant in his deployment of Asensio as a centre-forward. It worked a charm in the early goings of the season, but an injury kept him out of the side for over a month. Now returning from that knock, he seems primed to contribute again.

  • Achraf Hakimi PSG 2023-24Getty Images

    7Achraf Hakimi (7/10) ⬇️

Hakimi has regressed to what he probably is: a very good attacking full-back with some glaring defensive weaknesses. He was easily exploited by both Newcastle and Le Havre, but offered enough going forward in both fixtures to offset the woes at that end. World class on his day, worrying on others.

  • Manuel Ugarte PSG 2023-24Getty

    6Manuel Ugarte (7.5/10) ⬇️

Ugarte, it seemed, would need time to settle in at PSG. After all, here was an aggressive midfielder who thrived as a ball-winner, asked to play in a possession-based team. In the early days, those fears were alleviated, but mistakes have since crept into his game. The Uruguayan passes the ball sideways too often, and was too easily barged around by Newcastle at Parc des Princes.

  • Milan Skriniar PSG 2023-24Getty Images

    5Milan Skriniar (7.5/10) ⬆️

PSG certainly needed help at the back in the summer. The natural solution, then, was to get the best free-agent central defender available, and it's certainly been a successful investment so far. Skriniar had a mixed start at Parc des Princes, but has come into his own in recent weeks. He was excellent against Le Havre, and has seized control of the Parisian backline with Marquinhos out.

  • Marquinhos PSG 2023-24Getty Images

    4Marquinhos (7.5/10) ⬆️

Marquinhos was one of a handful of PSG players who managed to find some consistency in an otherwise turbulent 2022-23 campaign. And he's kept up that form, developing a fine understanding with Skriniar at the back, while also showing some valuable versatility as the Parisians nurse some knocks in other areas. A hamstring issue kept him out for two weeks, but he is an important leader and top-class defender.

  • Vitinha PSG 2023-24Getty Images

    3Vitinha (8/10) ⬆️

What a difference a new manager can make! Vitinha hasn't started every game, but he's been immensely impressive when on the pitch. Tricky in the final third, with a good shot on him, the Portuguese midfielder is starting to look something like the future star the Parisians thought they were getting last summer.

  • Warren Zaire-Emery France main 2023Getty Images

    2Warren Zaire-Emery (8.5/10) ⬇️

Losing Zaire-Emery to an ankle injury has proved to be a massive blow for the Parisians. Without him, they have toiled through games, been lucky to draw a crucial Champions League fixture, and look like a far less stable unit. Still, when fit, tjhe 17-year-old is an all-action option, and steadily becoming one of the best in Europe.

Harsh? Perhaps. But Zaire-Emery's injury has seen him bumped down the standings by the man who is keeping his team afloat...

  • kylian mbappe le havre psg 03122023 Getty imagesGetty

    1Kylian Mbappe (9/10) ⬆️

Things aren't perfect with Mbappe, but they're close. After being exiled from the side while briefly injured, and then struggling through a mini slump, PSG's star man has returned to something resembling his best. A winner against Le Havre last Sunday and late equaliser against Newcastle showed just how important he is. While he's in Paris, PSG can beat anyone.
