Keep, loan or sell? The players Man Utd should allow to leave in the 2023 summer transfer window

Manchester United are back in the Champions League and are looking forward to an epic FA Cup final against Manchester City to cap a season to remember. The Red Devils have made huge strides in their first season under Erik ten Hag and there is no doubt that the Dutchman is the right man to lead the club forward. But the future of many of his players is far from certain.

The manager has made no secret that his main objective is to sign a top-level striker this summer, while he has also shown interest in bringing in a new goalkeeper and a new midfielder. Where does that leave the likes of Anthony Martial and David de Gea? And which players that have excelled on loan deserve a chance in the first team?

GOAL runs over the United squad and assesses which players should get another opportunity to prove themselves and which ones should be politely shown the door...

  • David de Gea Manchester United 2022-23Getty

    KEEP: David de Gea

De Gea has had an up-and-down season. He won the Premier League Golden Glove for most clean sheets and surpassed Peter Schmeichel as the goalkeeper to have kept the most clean sheets for United. But he has committed a number of clangers, against Brentford, West Ham, Everton and Sevilla. His shortcomings with the ball at his feet have become increasingly prominent and opponents are targeting him more and more at goal-kicks.

His contract is about to run out and in an ideal world United would sign top-class proven goalkeeper to become the club's new No 1. However, with the club prioritising signing a striker and a midfielder, they do not have the funds to do that.

If United are able to negotiate a salary reduction they should hold onto De Gea for another year or two. They need to recruit a young, talented goalkeeper who can learn as his understudy and then take the baton from him.

  • Harry Maguire 2022-23Getty

    SELL: Harry Maguire

Maguire has had a very difficult season. He has played in fewer than half of United's league games and made only eight starts. And when he has played, he has struggled badly. His stock has fallen so much that he has fallen to fifth-choice centre-back, even dropping behind left-back Luke Shaw in the pecking order.

He is ill-equipped for the type of football Ten Hag wants United to play, but his career at the top level is by no means over. He remains first-choice for England despite everything that has happened this season and he would have plenty of takers from mid-level clubs.

United need to raise money for transfers and Maguire could still command a fee of up to £30 million. And given his England position could be at risk if he spends another season warming the bench, he should be motivated to draw a line under his Old Trafford career and move to a new club.

  • Jadon Sancho Tottenham 2022-23Getty

    KEEP: Jadon Sancho

Sancho has fallen way short of what was expected from him after his £73 million move from Borussia Dortmund. His second season has not been easy and Ten Hag removed him from the squad for over two months to work on his fitness and confidence.

But it is still too early to give up on such a talented player - especially at the age of 23 - and he has been showing flashes of his potential, ending the season with nine Premier League goal contributions. Unless United can come close to recouping the fee they paid in 2021, which seems unlikely given his recent form, they should keep the faith and find a way to get the best out him.

  • Anthony Martial Man Utd 2022-23Getty Images

    SELL: Anthony Martial

Since returning from a disappointing loan spell at Sevilla, Martial has proved two things most United fans already knew. Firstly, that he remains a quality player on his day. He has shown that with six Premier League goals from only 11 starts and important contributions in some key games.

But secondly, he has proved that he is incapable of staying fit for long periods. He has suffered no less than five injuries this season, missing a grand total of 27 matches. Since returning to training following an injury against Man City, he made no starts for three months, such was Ten Hag's fear that he would suffer a relapse.

The Frenchman has been unable to complete 90 minutes all season and, typically, in the last game of the season against Fulham he picked up a hamstring injury which rules him out of the FA Cup final. It is not his fault that he has had so many injury problems, but even a back-up striker is little use if he is not fit for most of the season.

With only one year left on his contract, a loan move will be no use, so United should take any offers they can get for him.

  • Amad Diallo Sunderland 2022-23Getty Images

    LOAN: Amad Diallo

Amad was a revelation during his season on loan at Sunderland. The forward inspired the Black Cats into the play-offs with 14 goals and became a fan favourite on Wearside.

In an ideal world, Sunderland would have been promoted to the Premier League and Amad would have been allowed to stay there and continue to grow. Unfortunately, they were beaten in the play-off semi-finals by Luton Town, and he must move on to another club to ensure he continues to progress.

The Ivorian was one of the most exciting young players in Europe when United signed him from Atalanta for an initial £19 million in 2021, and there has been a clamour from fans for him to return to Old Trafford immediately.

But this was the first campaign where Amad has had a regular run of games and it is too much of a risk to bring him back to United to only have a marginal role. Another loan move is in order, to a top-flight club either in Europe's top-five leagues or the rung below, such as the Eredivisie or one of Portugal's top sides.

  • Fred Manchester United Tottenham 2022-23Getty Images

    KEEP: Fred

Fred has not exactly set the world on fire in his five years with United, but he remains a reliable and consistent performer from the bench or when regular starters are injured or need a rest. There has been speculation that he could sign for Fulham and it might be tempting to cash in on the Brazilian as he is entering the final year of his contract.

But unless United receive an offer they can't refuse, they should hold on to Fred. He remains an important squad player and they should be wary of completely overhauling their squad. They only need to take a look at what has happened to Chelsea.

  • Aaron Wan-Bissaka Man Utd 2022-23Getty Images

    SELL: Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Wan-Bisska's United career was written off by many but he has staged a sensational turnaround, fighting his way back into the team and holding down his place as first-choice right-back for most of the remainder of the season. He has been one of many players to have improved under Ten Hag and has reaffirmed his reputation as one of the best one-v-one defenders in the league.

However, he still has a lack of ability going forward and seems to shrink whenever he gets into the opposing box. United have just handed a new contract to Diogo Dalot, indicating they believe the Portuguese is the club's future right-back, not Wan-Bissaka.

Wan-Bissaka has only one year left on his contract and tying him to a new deal would be costly. If they can get a decent offer for him in the summer, then they should cash in.

  • Scott McTominay 2022-23Getty

    SELL: Scott McTominay

The Scotland midfielder has played his lowest number of games since the 2018-19 season, starting only 10 times in the league under Ten Hag. He has had his injury problems, but overall he has not proved himself enough to his manager.

The fact the club have pursued deals for Declan Rice and Mason Mount shows that they want to freshen up their midfield, and selling McTominay would go some way to financing their summer spending. Newcastle are one club that have shown an interest and United have reportedly asked for £50 million to part ways with McTominay.

If a decent offer arrives, even one below that £50m valuation, United should take it.

  • Dean Henderson Nottingham ForestGetty

    SELL: Dean Henderson

United's decision to loan Henderson to Nottingham Forest was looking unwise when he made a fine start to the season while De Gea's problems were mounting, but the goalkeeper sustained a thigh injury in January, leading Forest to sign Keylor Navas as cover.

Henderson has likely burned his bridges with United after describing their treatment of him as "criminal" in an interview just after joining Forest. The goalkeeper has been given his fair share of opportunities by United but has fallen short of the standard the club require, and it is time to move him on.

With his contract running until 2025 there is scope to get a reasonable transfer fee. A return to newly-promoted Sheffield United, where he had two memorable seasons on loan, could be on the cards.

  • Eric Bailly Manchester United 2022-23Getty Images

    SELL: Eric Bailly

Bailly's long spell at United has been characterised by injuries and howlers in the few games he has played. He finally left the club to join Marseille on loan last summer, a year after renewing his contract with United.

But his injuries have followed him to Ligue 1, as has his propensity for getting himself in trouble - he was suspended for seven matches for kung-fu kicking an opponent in a cup match. There is no place for a player of Bailly's temperament and limited ability in Ten Hag's side and they should accept any fee they can get for him.

  • Alex Telles Manchester United 2022-23Getty

    SELL: Alex Telles

The Brazilian struggled to adapt to English football and never came close to challenging Luke Shaw as first-choice left-back in his two seasons with United. He has recovered his confidence on loan at Sevilla, recovering from a knee injury to play a big role in the team's strong finish to the season and seventh Europa League title.

But he has not done enough to suggest he could be a better option than Shaw or Tyrell Malacia for United, and the 30-year-old also has the disadvantage of having one year left on his contract with the Red Devils.

  • Anthony Elanga Manchester United 2022-23Getty Images

    LOAN: Anthony Elanga

Elanga was tipped for great things when he burst into the first team last season and scored three goals in the space of a month against Brentford, Leeds and Atletico Madrid, but he has not kicked on in this campaign. Ten Has has only given him seven starts in all competitions and he has not even had many opportunities from the bench.

Alejandro Garnacho has overtaken him as the boy wonder from the academy while Antony, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho were all already ahead of him. Elanga is still only 21 and there is plenty of time for him to turn his career around, but he is unlikely to get many opportunities to do that at United next season.

Equally, he is unlikely to garner a large transfer fee and United would not want to sell him for a low price and watch his career take off. That is why a loan move to a Premier League or team in one of Europe's top leagues would make the most sense. If it goes very well, he could get another chance at United, or alternatively his value would be raised and there would be more interest in a permanent move elsewhere.

  • Donny van de Beek Manchester United 2022-23Getty

    SELL: Donny van de Beek

Van de Beek's spell at Old Trafford has been a disaster for him and the club. The midfielder cost £40 million but has made only six Premier League starts across three years, with neither Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick or Ten Hag - under whom he enjoyed his best moments at Ajax - showing any faith in him.

The midfielder suffered a serious knee injury in January, and while he is due to recover in time for pre-season, he has little prospect of turning his career at Old Trafford around. It would be best for United to cut their losses and sell Van de Beek, giving him the chance to rebuild his promising but now fading career.

  • Hannibal Mejbri Manchester United 2022-23Getty Images

    LOAN: Hannibal Mejbri

The Tunisia international has grown a lot in his season on loan at Birmingham City, his first experience of senior football. He got a regular run of games, playing 38 times in midfield and getting a proper taste of English football.

The next step is another loan move to a top-flight side in Europe to continue his development and see whether he has the making of a United first-teamer in a year or two.

  • Alvaro Fernandez Preston North End 2022-23Getty Images

    LOAN: Alvaro Fernandez

Fernandez has had a very positive loan spell at Preston North End, his first experience of first-team football away from United's reserve team. The left-back played in the majority of matches, and although the Lilywhites finished 12th in the Championship, his performances were hugely encouraging.

The logical step is another loan to a top-flight club in England or abroad to give Fernandez more experience at a higher level. United are well stocked in his position with Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, but he is definitely a player with a huge future ahead of him and his next move needs to be managed carefully.

  • Facundo Pellistri Manchester United 2022-23Getty Images

    LOAN: Facundo Pellistri

The Uruguayan has had few opportunities in his first full season back at the club, but when he has got on the pitch, he has looked exciting, bringing pace and unpredictability. However, he has little prospect of getting more opportunities next season after being overtaken by Alejandro Garnacho in the pecking order.

At the age of 21, Pellistri still has a lot of developing to do and he needs another loan spell to prosper. After two positive seasons in La Liga with Alaves, it could be time for him to try his luck on loan at another Premier League side so he can get used to its physical demands. A move to the Championship could even work, as the success of Amad at Sunderland shows.

  • Brandon Williams Manchester UnitedGetty

    SELL: Brandon Williams

There was a lot of hope that Williams would turn into United's first-choice left-back in the future when he first got into the team in 2019, but he has not realised his potential.

He had an ultimately disappointing loan spell at Norwich City last season and hasn't played a minute of football since returning last summer. His contract expires next year, so United are running out of time to make any money from him. It is clear Williams has no long-term future at the club so any offer they get for him will be worth taking.
