    After a stellar performance for Spain at the European Championship, several top European clubs had shown interest in signing Williams including giants like Barcelona, Arsenal and Chelsea, however, the young winger decided to stay back at Athletic Club.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

    The 22-year-old's current contract expires at the end of the 2024/25 season and while The Lions are likely to offer a new and improved deal to their star attacker, the Spain international is yet to confirm if he is planning to stay back beyond the current campaign.

    In an interview with AS, the Spain international was asked if he is planning to put pen to paper on a new deal to which the winger said, "I am happy in Bilbao, I have decided to stay here. It is incredible to see the atmosphere that was created after the game against AZ."

    WHAT NEXT FOR NICO WILLIAMS?

    It remains to be seen if Catalan giants Barcelona - who were favourites to sign Williams in the summer - can finally rope in the attacker next season for free. The player will be next seen in action on Sunday as Ernesto Valverde's side take on Girona in La Liga.
