Depay's move to Atletico Madrid from Barcelona in January 2023 was seen as a fresh start for the talented forward. The transfer, worth €4 million (£3.41m/$4.34m), came after a challenging period at the Catalan club where he struggled to secure a regular spot in the starting lineup. However, things did not improve much and the Dutch forward, who had a contract set to expire in 2025, wrote a heartfelt post on social media expressing his gratitude towards the fans and staff for their support - indicating that his time at the Wanda Metropolitano is over.

"Not easy to say how I feel about writing this message because I feel that things could’ve been very different. Maybe it’s better to keep that conversation for another time," he wrote. "To Atletico Madrid, my team-mates, the staff and especially the fans, I wanna thank you for the energy and support I’ve experienced in my time being an Atleti player. Despite flashes of brilliance, Depay's impact was limited by competition for places and injuries. Over the course of his stay, he scored nine goals in 31 league appearances, with only 12 starts. His performance was overshadowed by the consistent form of fellow forwards Alvaro Morata and Antoine Griezmann, making it difficult for Depay to cement his place in the team.

Depay's departure comes at a time when he has been called up to the Netherlands squad for Euro 2024 by coach Ronald Koeman. He hopes to put in an inspired performance with the national team in Germany so that he can attract potential suitors to a new chapter in his career where he can fully realise his potential and consistently perform at the highest level.
