Marc Guehi handed Euro 2024 ban as England talisman booked after trying to atone for hospital pass from Kieran Trippier in last-16 encounter against Slovakia

  • Guehi impressing at Euro 2024 so far
  • But picks up second booking against Slovakia
  • Will miss quarter-final vs Switzerland
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Guehi picked up his first booking of the tournament against Slovenia and saw yellow again in the opening stages of Sunday's last-16 tie with Slovakia, which England ended up winning 2-1 after extra time. The defender was sold short by a poor pass from Trippier and committed a foul which saw the referee reach into his pocket. The booking brings an automatic one-match ban for Guehi, meaning he will have to sit out the quarter-final tie against Switzerland.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The ban for Guehi comes as a big blow for England and their hopes of progression to the last four, with Switzerland likely to pose a far tougher challenge than Slovakia. The Crystal Palace defender has come into the starting XI for Euro 2024 and has impressed alongside John Stones in the heart of the England backline. Gareth Southgate has been reluctant to make changes to his England team at the tournament so far but will be forced into at least one alteration against the Swiss. The England boss has Lewis Dunk, Joe Gomez and Ezri Konsa available to come into the team for Guehi.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

England picked up two yellow cards in the first seven minutes against Slovakia. Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo joined Guehi in the book after coming into the starting XI and replacing Conor Gallagher.
