  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Cucurella has been a 'wind-up merchant' at Chelsea, as the Spaniard plays the role of one of the more experienced players in the rather young Blues squad under Enzo Maresca. The Euro 2024 winner has now opened up on the tag of 'annoying' being placed on him over the years by opposition clubs and fans.

    WHAT CUCRELLA SAID

Speaking to the media, Cucurella said, “I understand we have a responsibility because we play for a big club. When I played for more small clubs, not at this level, you don’t feel this [as much]. It’s part of the game, you play for Chelsea. A club that needs to win trophies.

“For me, we need to stay focused on what we need to do and prove. I always say it doesn’t matter if you win 10 or 11 games or five, the most important thing is the trophies at the end of the season. It’s time to show we are ready.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Cucurella has had a massive responsibility this season under Maresca due to the Blues squad's lack of experience, and the Spaniard went on to explain that he has a role in the team like everyone else. Cucurella added: “I think everyone has this role [to keep pressure off the team].

“I do my best always to help the team. As a young squad, the age doesn’t matter, we need to show we are ready. We can improve; it’s not an excuse. If we show we are ready in the game it doesn’t matter the age. Tomorrow, we have a good opportunity. Now, it is everything to play for."

    WHAT NEXT FOR CHELSEA?

The Blues' best chance at winning a trophy this season is likely the Europa Conference League, as Maresca's side are already in the round of 16 and will now take on Copenhagen on Thursday, March 6, as they look to build confidence towards the end of the season.
