Marc-Andre ter Stegen to make Premier League switch?! Man Utd and Tottenham make moves for Barcelona outcast ahead of January transfer window

Barcelona’s veteran goalkeeper ter Stegen has become a hot topic ahead of the January transfer window. The 33-year-old, currently sidelined with a back injury, has drawn concrete interest from United, Newcastle, and Tottenham. According to Sport, the clubs have contacted the La Liga side to explore a possible move once the Germany international returns to full fitness in late November. The goalkeeper has been out with injury since July 2025.

United’s goalkeeping department remains unsettled under coach Ruben Amorim, while Newcastle are seeking experienced depth behind Nick Pope. Both clubs view ter Stegen as a proven shot-stopper who can bring leadership and composure. According to sources, several Premier League sides, as well as Monaco, have enquired about either a loan or a loan-to-buy deal. However, Barca are not interested in sanctioning a transfer unless the player himself requests one.

Ter Stegen’s uncertain status stems from a tense summer at Olympic Stadium. His back injury and disagreement with the club over medical leave triggered a major fallout, leading to his temporary removal as captain. Barcelona wanted him to sign long-term medical leave papers to free up wage space for new arrivals like Garcia and Marcus Rashford under La Liga’s FFP rules, something the German initially refused, insisting his recovery wouldn’t exceed three months.

The dispute spiraled into public statements and internal disciplinary action before being resolved through dialogue. Flick later admitted “communication mistakes” and reinstated him as captain, but the episode left a lasting crack in the relationship between the player and club leadership. 

A Premier League move would offer ter Stegen a chance to reclaim his elite status. At Old Trafford, his ball-playing skills and command could complement Amorim’s system, while at Newcastle, his experience fits Eddie Howe’s high-intensity, possession-based setup, as well as Spurs' way of playing.
