Man Utd share heartfelt message as former wonderkid Angel Gomes is hospitalised after suffering 'violent blow to the head' in Lille match

The match, which took place at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, was marred by a distressing moment early in the game as Gomes, who has been a key player for Lille since joining from Boavista in 2021, was involved in a violent clash with Stade de Reims' Amadou Kone. The collision resulted in a severe head injury prompting immediate action from the match officials and medical staff.

Kone's tackle was deemed dangerous, leading to his immediate expulsion from the game. The severity of the situation was evident as emergency services rushed onto the pitch to provide treatment to the injured Gomes. As he lay on the pitch receiving medical care, an outpouring of support emerged from all corners of the stadium. Lille's players formed a protective circle around their stricken teammate, while fans from both Lille and Reims united in a poignant display of solidarity. For ten minutes, the supporters chanted Gomes' name, creating an emotional atmosphere as they wished for his recovery.

Lille later informed that Gomes is recovering well in the hospital.

"Angel Gomes has regained consciousness and has been transferred to hospital. All our thoughts are with him," read a tweet from the club's official handle.

Gomes' former club United also shared a heartfelt response.

"Sending love and strength to @AGomes_47, who has been taken to hospital following a collision while playing for Lille. We’re thinking of you, Angel," the Red Devils wrote.

The gravity of Gomes' injury led to a significant interruption in the match and the referee signalled for an unprecedented 34 minutes of added time in the first half.

Gomes was replaced by Hakon Arnar Haraldsson as play resumed amidst a subdued atmosphere. Lille captain, Bafode Diakite went on to score in the 30th minute of added time and then celebrated with Gomes' jersey as a tribute to the player.
