Man Utd receive welcome transfer budget boost as impending overseas deal nears completion

Manchester United are poised to secure a welcome financial boost once Kambwala completes his transfer from Villarreal to Como, according to The Mirror. The Italian side have reportedly beaten Osasuna to his signature. When Kambwala departed for Spain in 2024, United negotiated a sizeable sell-on clause, alongside a buy-back option and matching rights for three years

Villarreal initially paid an upfront fee of €5.5 million, with a further €6m in add-ons. While Villarreal are only expected to receive a modest fee for the defender, the sell-on clause ensures that United will still pocket a percentage of the final transfer sum to boost their ongoing recruitment efforts.

Including robust sell-on clauses has become a hallmark of the new sporting structure at Old Trafford. While United occasionally utilised such agreements in the past, they have become standard practice since Ineos took charge of football operations. The club have ensured they profit from future sales by applying similar terms to several recent departures. This strict negotiation strategy saw a high-percentage sell-on clause included in the sale of Tyler Fredricson to Lausanne-Sport.

Furthermore, Radek Vitek moved to Middlesbrough with a clause of up to 35 per cent, while Ethan Williams and Ethan Ennis both departed for Peterborough and Stockport County, respectively, with 50 per cent clauses attached.

The incoming funds arrive at a crucial time for Michael Carrick, who hopes to finalise squad improvements before the window shuts. He remains optimistic about capitalising on late market opportunities.

"I just think we're looking to strengthen the squad," he said. "We're certainly working towards that, making the most of the situation that we have and trying to improve things and trying to move forward. You know, I said the same thing to you last time. So, yeah, certainly trying to make the most of the opportunities to finish the window stronger than we went into it. And I think we're a good way to doing that, so far."

Manchester United have limited time to utilise this additional revenue before the summer deadline. The club are expected to monitor the market closely over the coming days, exploring both permanent and loan deals to plug remaining gaps in the squad. Meanwhile, Kambwala will travel to Italy to complete his medical and finalise terms ahead of his debut for Como in Serie A.
