    WHAT HAPPENED?

According to Fabrizio Romano, Trabzonspor have reached a verbal agreement with the Red Devils for loaning Onana. The transfer is essentially complete; the only remaining step is for the player himself to greenlight the deal.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Trabzonspor’s urgent search for a new number one stems from the high-profile sale of their long-serving captain Ugurcan Cakir, who joined Galatasaray for a staggering €36 million (£31m/$42m) earlier this summer. Onana, who was once tipped to be United’s long-term solution between the sticks, has suddenly emerged as the most suitable option at the top of their wishlist.

Onana’s United journey has unravelled alarmingly quickly. The Cameroonian shot-stopper was left out of Amorim’s first three Premier League line-ups, only managing a start in the humiliating EFL Cup second-round defeat to League Two minnows Grimsby Town. While the club initially suggested his absence was due to lingering fitness issues, the real hammer blow came on deadline day when United splashed £18m ($24m) on 23-year-old Lammens from Royal Antwerp. That purchase, combined with Altay Bayindir already deputising in goal, left Onana’s future in tatters.

    DID YOU KNOW?

Onana's strained relationship with the club hierarchy has not helped his cause. The keeper, who still has three years left on his deal, was one of several players hit with a 25 per cent wage reduction following United’s Champions League failure in the 2023-24 campaign. Rather than accept the pay cut, Onana reportedly demanded a new deal and improved terms during the summer, a move that rubbed Amorim and the club board the wrong way, per reports from The Athletic. For a player who conceded 65 goals in 50 appearances last season, the request did not sit well.

    WHAT NEXT?

With the windows closed across most of Europe, Onana’s options for a fresh start are minimal. That makes Turkey’s extended market a potential lifeline for the Cameroonian to rebuild his shattered confidence. If Onana ultimately departs, the spotlight will immediately fall on Lammens and Bayindir. The Belgian newcomer is untested in the Premier League, while Bayindir has already come under fire from fans after his howler against Arsenal. For a club already facing scrutiny across the pitch, Amorim's handling of the goalkeeping department risks becoming another lightning rod for criticism.
