'Could hardly think' - Man City wonderkid Sverre Halseth Nypan reveals culture shock of Middlesbrough loan move

Nypan made plenty of headlines in Norway for the rapid rise in his career. At the age of just 15 years and 322 days, the midfielder debuted in the Norwegian top flight, becoming one of the youngest players in its history. He was just over 200 days older than Arsenal skipper Martin Odegaard when he made his own debut. The wonderkid soon caught the eyes of top clubs in Europe as well as in the Premier League, with the likes of Man Utd, Arsenal and Aston Villa all keen on signing the Nypan at the time.

However, City's scouting and recruitment staff fended off rival interest and the club eventually secured the signing of the teenager from Rosenborg for £12.5 million ($17m) in the summer transfer window. The Cityzens, though, did not keep him at the club for long as they sent him out on loan to Championship side Middlesbrough as they wanted the youngster to get as much game time as possible in the 2025-26 campaign. 

In an interview with Nettavisen, Nypan opened up about his transfer to City and his subsequent loan move to Middlesbrough as he spoke about his first experience of playing in England. The teenager said: "I remember the first training there, I was running around and could hardly think. You had to get up under pressure and run as much as you could. Gradually, it becomes normal, the metres you have to cover become a habit. Then you are able to calm your head down a bit and start thinking, at the same time as you cover the metres you have to. I feel like I am making progress every day. It is important to get pace in your game, that is what I am after."

He added: "I feel I have already taken some steps up in terms of fitness and have more steps to take. Demands are set and that’s actually nice. It’s very educational and something I needed. I’m learning a lot from it. It was something I needed and part of the reason why I went there. I don’t like to think that far into the future. I’ll take this season here with Middlesbrough, and we’ll see what happens."

During his early days in Norway, when he emerged as one of the brightest prospects in Europe, Nypan was often compared to his predecessor Odegaard. In 2023, Norwegian football expert Jesper Mathisen had told TV2: "Sverre Nypan is extremely exciting, and I get a bit of the same feeling as when I saw Martin Odegaard break through as a boy." Odegaard, in his early days, enjoyed a similar hype and was even picked up by Spanish giants Real Madrid at the age of just 15. While he did not have the best experience in La Liga due to the immense midfield talent that the Madrid side possessed, his career took a massive turn once the midfielder moved to north London and signed for the Gunners.

In terms of playing style, Nypan resembles both his compatriot Odegaard and Barcelona's midfield general Frenkie de Jong. Like De Jong, Nypan can be robust in the centre of the park with feisty tackles and sharp passes. On the other hand, he can also penetrate in the attacking third when needed, similar to how Odegaard operates at Arsenal. With more game time at Middlesbrough, Nypan could prove to be an asset as the Cityzens slowly enter into a new era. 

At Middlesbrough, Nypan has appeared in seven Championship matches for the club, although he has only started in two games. He has clocked 297 minutes on the pitch and is slowly establishing himself as a key player in the second-tier side. He will be next seen in action this Friday as Boro take on Ipswich Town, hoping to become a regular fixture in Rob Edward's Boro side as the season progresses and he continues to adapt to his new surroundings.
