Kylian Mbappe reaches massive Champions League milestone only bettered by Lionel Messi with goal for Real Madrid at Atalanta

The French superstar netted his 50th goal in the prestigious competition, achieving the feat at the age of 25 years and 356 days. This makes him the second-youngest player to accomplish this landmark, a record that remains in the hands of Lionel Messi, who reached a half-century of Champions League goals at just 24 years and 284 days in 2012.

Mbappe struck early against Atalanta as he skillfully found the bottom corner in the tenth minute, giving Los Blancos the lead. This marked his 12th goal for the Spanish giants since joining them in the summer. By reaching 50 goals in just 79 Champions League appearances, Mbappe also ranks as the fourth-quickest player to achieve this landmark. Only Ruud van Nistelrooy (62 matches), Messi (66 matches), and Robert Lewandowski (77 matches) have accomplished the feat faster.

Mbappe’s achievement places him ahead of another football legend, Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored his 50th Champions League goal at 28 years and 78 days. Despite this milestone, the French star still has a long way to go to match the former Real Madrid icon's all-time competition tally of 140 goals.

Mbappe’s historic night was cut short as he was forced off the pitch in the 36th minute due to a muscle injury. However, Real Madrid rallied in the second half and goals from Vinicius Jr. and Jude Bellingham ensured that they bagged the three points to climb to the 18th spot in the standings. To secure a direct qualification to the Champions League knockout rounds, Real Madrid must climb into the top eight, which guarantees automatic progression to the round of 16. With two critical matches remaining against RB Salzburg and Brest in January 2025, the pressure is on for Carlo Ancelotti’s men to deliver.
