  • Belgium qualify for Euro 2024 last 16
  • Played out uneventful stalemate
  • Now set to play France
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Belgium drew 0-0 with Ukraine to confirm their progression to the last 16, and their second-placed finish has ensured that they will play France in the next round. Having stuttered throughout the group stage - they were beaten by Slovakia and narrowly defeated Romania - De Bruyne and his team-mates were jeered at full-time.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Having taken his side over to the fans, to applaud them for their support, De Bruyne was met with boos. As a result, he turned on his heels, and led his team-mates away and down the tunnel, refusing to applaud. When he was awarded the Player of the Match award, his name was also met with loud jeers in the stadium.

  • WHAT DE BRUYNE SAID

De Bruyne told reporters: "We tried to win the match. We had goal-scoring opportunities, but we didn't take any risks with the corner because we knew we might concede a goal.

"If that happens, you're out of the Euros. It's a shame we didn't manage to score before -- we had opportunities -- and after that we just need the fans to stay with us.

"We need these fans. We'll need them against France. That's all I have to say."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

De Bruyne scored against Romania but has failed to register an assist at the tournament thus far. Belgium will need him to be at his very best if they are to have any chance of beating France.
