Juventus most expensive player sales - How Bianconeri made over €1.6 billion in outgoing transfers

Juventus have built a bit of a reputation for themselves as a smart operator in the transfer market, particularly during Beppe Marotta's time in charge.

Sure, there have been some misses as well, but there is no denying that Juventus have been involved in some incredibly profitable deals.

Paul Pogba is probably the ultimate example of such a transfer.

The Frenchman joined Juventus from Manchester United on a free transfer as a promising youngster, and was then sold to his old club again a few years down the line for €105 million.

Profitable indeed!

But who else have the Serie A giants cashed in on over the course of the last two decades or so to fill up their bank account?

Juventus top 10 most expensive player sales

  • Alvaro Morata JuventusGetty Images

    10Alvaro Morata | €30m / £27m | Real Madrid | 2016

After graduating from Real Madrid's academy in 2013, Morata was promoted to the senior team, where he featured for one season.

In the summer of 2014, Juventus came calling, paying a €20 million (£18 million) fee for the Spaniard, with Real Madrid including a buy-back clause.

Morata shone during his time at Juventus and two seasons later, Madrid paid €30m (£27m) to bring him back to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Further down the line, Madrid offloaded Morata to Chelsea a season later for €66m (£59.40m).

After not settling in at Stamford Bridge, the striker made a loan move to Atletico Madrid in 2019, before signing permanently for them in 2020.

Atletico then loaned him back to Juventus for two seasons and he returned to the Wanda Metropolitano again in 2022.

    9Filippo Inzaghi | €36.15m / £32.54m | Milan | 2001

One of the greatest poachers of his generation, Inzaghi was a breakout star at Atalanta in the 1996-97 season.

Seeing his performances that season - where he scored 25 goals in 34 games - Juventus paid a fee of €10.30 million (£9.27 million) to lure him to Turin.

After four years at Juve, in which he won the Scudetto in his debut season and scored 89 goals in 165 games, Milan opted to pay a hefty fee of €36.15m (£32.54m) for the striker.

Inzaghi attained legendary status at Milan, scoring 126 goals in 300 appearances, winning two Champions Leagues, one FIFA Club World Cup, two Serie A titles, two UEFA Super Cup trophies, one Italian Super Cup and one Italian Cup.

The striker also won the World Cup with Italy in 2006.

  • Mattia Caldara Juventus 2018-19Getty Images

    8Mattia Caldara | €36.87m / £33.18m | Milan | 2018

After impressing during loan spells at Trapani and Cesena between 2014 to 2016, Juventus signed Caldara from Atalanta in January 2017 for €19 million (£17.10 million), before sending him back on loan to the Bergamo side until the summer of 2018.

Without even making a single appearance for Juventus, he was then sold to Milan in August 2018 for €36.87 (£33.18m).

Caldara barely appeared for Milan in his time there and was loaned back to Atalanta in January 2020.

Milan then loaned him to Venezia in the summer of 2021 and Spezia in 2022.

  • Arturo Vidal JuventusGetty

    7Arturo Vidal | €39.25m / £35.33m | Bayern Munich | 2015

After impressing at Bayer Leverkusen for four years, Vidal made the move to Juventus in the summer of 2011 for €12.50 million (£11.25 million).

The Chilean midfielder won four Scudetto crowns, one Italian Cup and two Italian Super Cups with Juventus. Vidal was also voted Player of the Year in 2012/13.

In 2015, Bayern Munich showed an interest in signing him and agreed to pay a fee of €39.25m (£35.33m) for the combative midfielder.
Vidal spent three years at Bayern, before moving to Barcelona and later to Inter. In the summer of 2022, he joined Flamengo on a free transfer.

  • Leonardo Bonucci JuventusGetty Images

    6Leonardo Bonucci | €42m / £37.80m | Milan | 2017

After starting his career at Inter, where he failed to secure regular first-team action, Bonucci joined Juventus from Bari for €15.50 million (£13.95 million) in 2010.

At Juventus, Bonucci formed an incredible defensive partnership with Giorgio Chiellini until 2017 when Milan signed him for €42m (£37.80m) on a five-year deal.

However, the defender only stayed at Milan for one season and re-joined Juventus in 2018 for €35m (£31.50m).

  • Pjanic Juventus Serie A

    5Miralem Pjanic | €60m /£54m | Barcelona | 2020

Part of an "accounting" transfer designed by Barcelona and Juventus in 2020, Pjanic and Arthur swapped teams at what seemed like an inflated price in order to balance the books for both clubs.

As part of that deal, Pjanic joined Barcelona for €60 million (£54 million).

Just one year after his move to Camp Nou, the Bosnian joined Besiktas on loan, and he ended his troubled time at the Catalan club permanently in the summer of 2022 following a free transfer to UAE based Sharjah FC.

Pjanic made 30 appearances for Barcelona, playing just 1,296 minutes in his time there.

  • Cancelo Juventus Atletico MadridGetty Images

    4Joao Cancelo | €65m / £58.50m | Manchester City | 2019

Joao Cancelo came through the Benfica academy and was loaned to Valencia for a season in 2014, before the Portuguese club decided to cash in on him altogether with a €15 million (£13.50 million) sale to the Spanish club a year later.

Cancelo grew in stature for two seasons at Valencia, before Inter decided to bring him for a season-long loan in 2017.

In the summer of 2018, Juventus swooped in and paid €40.40m (£36.36m) for the Portuguese full-back.

After just one season in Turin in which he won the Serie A title and the Italian Super Cup, Manchester City lured him to the Premier League in a deal worth €65m (£58.50m), with Danilo heading in the opposite direction as part of the transfer.

Cancelo has since then played a crucial role at Manchester City as Pep Guardiola's men continue to dominate the English footballing scene.

  • Matthijs de Ligt Juventus 2022Getty Images

    3Matthijs de Ligt | €67m / £60.30m | Bayern Munich | 2022

After his scintillating performances for Ajax, in which he helped them to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2018-19, Juventus signed De Ligt for an eye-watering €85.50 million (£76.95 million) in the summer of 2019.

De Ligt was decent during his three season spell at Juventus, winning the Serie A, an Italian Cup and an Italian Super Cup, but never really quite hit the heights the club had been hoping for.

In the summer transfer window of 2022, Bayern Munich decided to go big and made De Ligt the second-most expensive signing in their history, agreeing to pay Juventus €67m (£60.30m) for the Dutchman.

  • Zinedine Zidane Juventus River Plate Intercontinental CupGetty Images

    2Zinedine Zidane | €77.50m / £69.75m | Real Madrid | 2001

Juventus signed Zidane from Bordeaux in July 1996 for a mere €3.50 million (£3.15 million).

In his five-year spell in Turin, Zidane transformed himself into one of the greatest midfielders of all time, winning two Serie A titles, a UEFA Super Cup, an Italian Super Cup and an Intercontinental Cup.

While still at Juventus at club level, Zidane led France to World Cup glory in 1998 and also won the Euro Championship with them in 2000.

His one Ballon d'Or (1998) and two of his three FIFA Best Men's player awards (1998 and 2000) came during his time at Juventus.

In 2001, Real Madrid came calling, wanting to make 29-year-old Zidane their prime Galactico and agreed to pay a world-record €77.50m (£69.75m) to Juventus for the French legend's signature.

  • Paul Pogba JuventusGetty Images

    1Paul Pogba | €105m / £94.50m | Manchester United | 2016

A transfer most Manchester United fans would want to erase from memory as the Red Devils broke the world record for transfers in 2016 when they agreed to pay €105 million (£94.50 million) to Juventus to bring Paul Pogba back to Old Trafford, after letting him go for free in 2012.

Pogba transformed himself into one of the best midfielders in the world at Juventus, but at United, he failed to quite live up to the high expectations.

After what many will consider an underwhelming spell, he left United once again to join Juventus for free in the summer of 2022.
