'It is just crazy' - Jurgen Klopp hails 'outstanding' Darwin Nunez despite penalty miss in Liverpool's thumping win over Chelsea

The Uruguayan striker had a bizarre outing against Mauricio Pochettino's men as he struck the woodwork four times - which is a record for a player in a single Premier League match since the 2003/04 season. Moreover, his penalty miss in the first half further dampened his confidence. However, he ended the match on a positive note after setting up Luis Diaz for the fourth goal in the 79th minute which lifted his spirits.

Klopp revealed that the striker was frustrated for squandering so many chances but hailed his contribution as "insane" and "impossible to defend".

"An insane first half, unbelievable, I would say not to defend. Outstanding, really good," he said.

"Why do we speak about Darwin? Obviously because he has so many situations where he missed but it was the first game since we count that a player hit the woodwork four times in a game. Now think you are in his boots, how that feels. Missing a penalty, you could see it at half-time, he was really upset with himself.

"It is just crazy that he creates that many. Imagine for a second he would take them all... the numbers would be absolutely insane to the extent where you wouldn’t understand it anymore, so it’s normal. For us it is important because we scored four goals, who cares if we could have scored a fifth or a sixth? It is really not important. We need to win football games – and he will score. He scored already. Then setting up in a really important moment the fourth goal, because 3-2 or 4-1 is a big difference, that makes him really the player he is for us. The rest will come, definitely."

Despite Nunez drawing a blank, Liverpool looked unstoppable as they opened up a five-point lead over nearest rivals Manchester City with goals from Diogo Jota, Conor Bradley, Dominik Szoboszlai and Diaz. Christopher Nkunku, who came on as a substitute in the second half, managed to pull one back for the London side which was simply not enough to salvage anything from Merseyside.

Nunez will have an opportunity to make amends for his mistakes in just four days as games keep coming thick and fast for Liverpool. His missed chances will be forgotten and forgiven if the Uruguayan can inspire his side to a win over Arsenal, who is another title contender, on Sunday at Emirates.
