    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The match took place after the FIFA Football Summit 2023 where Infantino urged all stakeholders to stand firmly beside the referees. His comments come in the wake of the violent incident in Turkey which saw match official Halil Umut Meler get assaulted by Ankaragucu president Faruk Koca.

"We all have to fight for the referees against any sort of abuse and violence, but also to bring back respect and tolerance," he said.

"And this starts with us, this starts with you, with the leaders of football, with the way we speak, with the way we act. It is our responsibility, because what we do has an impact on many, many girls and many, many boys, not just positive but also negative."
