  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    James, who has appeared in 29 matches across all competitions for Wigan Athletic in the 2024/25 campaign, is all set to make his international debut this month after being called up to the Maltese national team. The international call-up comes up a month after the 22-year-old was awarded the Maltese citizenship, which he qualified for through his paternal grandfather.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

    Along with James, Jamie Carragher was also given Maltese citizenship. While the Liverpool legend represented England 38 times during his playing career, his son will play for Malta in international football.

  • WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

    Right after James was handed the Maltese citizenship, Malta Football Association president Bjorn Vassallo said: "We’ve been in talks with James and his father, Jamie, for the last few months now; he is open to it, but we’re still working on it."

    WHAT NEXT FOR JAMES CARRAGHER?

    The young defender could earn his maiden international cap on March 21 when Malta takes on Finland in a 2026 World Cup qualifying match. After facing Finland, they will lock horns against Poland on March 24.
