'There should be a real discussion' - Jamie Carragher hints at doubts over Mohamed Salah's future at Liverpool after another anonymous display in Merseyside derby defeat

Liverpool's Premier League title aspirations took a severe hit at Goodison Park as they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat against their Merseyside rivals. Goals from Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin sealed the victory for Sean Dyche's men, marking Liverpool's first loss at Goodison since 2010 and leaving them trailing three points behind league leaders Arsenal, with Manchester City looming close behind with two games in hand.

Salah was once again an anonymous figure in attack which led Carragher to insist on a reevaluation of the Egypian's future at Anfield - considering that he has just one year left in his contract. The club legend argued that Salah has been "a shadow of himself" since he returned from injury after the AFCON in February as he has found the net only three times in his last eight league appearances.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Carragher said: "Mo Salah is Liverpool's goalscorer and he's gone off the boil. That's shone a light on others. There is a real discussion for the new manager about what the future holds for Mo Salah – it's the first time we've asked that question. He only has a year to go on his deal. He's looked a shadow of himself for a lot of this season but especially since he's come back from injury. He is Liverpool's legend, superstar, one of the all-time greats, but he's been so far off it."

Prior to the AFCON tournament, Salah boasted an impressive shot conversion rate of 21.54%, netting 14 goals from 65 attempts in the Premier League. However, since his return, Salah's conversion rate has plummeted to a mere 8.57% from 35 attempts, signalling a notable downturn in his scoring efficiency.

Salah had been linked to a potential move to Saudi Arabia ahead of the previous summer transfer window. However, with only one year remaining on his current contract, Liverpool face a pivotal decision regarding his future at the club as they could consider the possibility of cashing in on the prolific striker amidst growing uncertainty over his form and prospects. He will return to action to make amends to his current form when the Reds take on West Ham on Saturday afternoon.
