'We played so badly' - Italy star Bryan Cristante slams team-mates and admits they 'deserve' to be knocked out of Euro 2024 after awful display against Switzerland

Italy lost 2-0 to Switzerland in the last-16 of Euro 2024, bringing to an end their defence of the trophy. Goals from Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas have booked the Swiss a quarter-final spot against the winner of England's clash with Slovakia.

Cristante has claimed that his side were deservedly knocked out of the tournament, having already scraped through the group stages. It remains to be seen if consequences will follow for manager Luciano Spalletti but the Roma midfielder did not hold back in his scathing review of the performance.

Cristante told reporters: "There is little to be said, we were outplayed from all points of view, we need to clear our heads and understand what we did wrong and start again with a different attitude.

"At the level of organisation there was so much difference and when there is so much difference then the energy is lost, there is nothing to say and we go home deservedly."

He added: "Preparation? I don't know, there are many things that didn't go (well). We played so badly compared to the others and it is therefore down to many factors."

Italy will attempt to conduct a post-mortem on a terrible campaign while Switzerland await the result of Sunday's England clash to learn their quarter-final fate.
