'He has incredible potential' - Wojciech Szczesny 'proud' to help Joan Garcia in supporting role and says Barcelona goalkeeper already 'among the best in Europe'

His arrival created a contentious situation with long-time number one Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who was recovering from back surgery. The club used part of the German's salary to register Garcia, which required a medical release that Ter Stegen initially refused to sign, leading to him being temporarily stripped of the captaincy. Manager Hansi Flick has since admitted communication could have been better but has publicly backed the 24-year-old Garcia as the undisputed future of Barcelona's goal.

Following Garcia's demanding Champions League debut against Newcastle, 35-year-old Szczesny offered a candid assessment of his status at the club. The former Juventus star, who came out of retirement to join the Catalan club last year, confirmed he knew his playing time would be limited this season and is content with his new responsibilities.

"I'm a substitute and, barring any surprises, I'll remain so," Szczesny said. "My role this season is to prepare Joan García as best as possible for the matches. I'm very proud to play this role; I've been preparing for it since signing my new contract and I'm not disappointing."

Szczesny was full of praise for the young Catalan goalkeeper, who has stepped up in Ter Stegen's absence. While highlighting Garcia's physical qualities, he also noted the area where he can provide the most guidance.

"I think he's a goalkeeper with incredible potential, who's already among the best in Europe physically," he stated. "Joan lacks experience at the highest level, and that's something he needs to strengthen. It's not easy to play every three days under so much pressure. It's something he needs to learn. I hope I can contribute to his success."

With Garcia now established as the starting goalkeeper for La Liga and Champions League fixtures, Szczesny's opportunities are expected to come primarily in the Copa del Rey. The situation is complicated by the long-term injury to Ter Stegen, who is out for several more months but has stated his desire to see out his contract. For now, the club's focus will be on Garcia's development, aided by the mentorship of his experienced understudy.
