Hazards, De Boers & football's most famous brothers

Newcastle United boast formidable brothers in the form of Sean and Matthew Longstaff.

Sean, who is the elder of the two, broke into the Magpies' first team during the 2018-19 season and his early displays were enough to warrant links with Manchester United.

Matthew is two years younger than Sean and followed his brother's path into the first team in 2019-20, scoring the winning goal on his full debut against Manchester United.

Brazil World Cup winner Mazinho's sons Thiago and Rafinha are both professional footballers.

They came through Barcelona's youth teams before graduating to the first team. However, while Rafinha remains at the club, Thiago opted to join Bayern Munich.

They have also gone different routes internationally, with Thiago playing for Spain and Rafinha throwing his lot in with Brazil.

Liverpool and Brazil number one Alisson isn't the only goalkeeper in the Becker family.

The Reds shotstopper's older brother by five years, Muriel, is also a professional footballer.

Previously with Internacional, Muriel now also plays in Europe, with Belenenses.

There was a Baresi on either side of the Milan derby during the course of two decades from the late 1970s to the early 1990s.

Giuseppe, the older of the two, played for Inter and Franco played for AC Milan.

Both excelled on either side of the San Siro divide and represented Italy, with both appearing in the 1980 European Championship squad.

Giuseppe won two Serie A titles and a UEFA Cup, while Franco won six Serie A titles, three European Cups and a World Cup.

German twin brothers Sven and Lars Bender came through the ranks at 1860 Munich, earning a reputation as fearsome defensive midfielders.

They went their separate ways in 2009, with Sven joining Borussia Dortmund and Lars going to Bayer Leverkusen, but they have been reunited following Sven’s switch to Leverkusen in 2017.

Both have played for Germany at senior level and were part of the national team that won silver at the 2016 Olympics.

Kevin-Prince Boateng and Jerome Boateng are brothers who both came through the ranks at Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga.

Kevin-Prince, who recently joined Barcelona, has been the more nomadic of the pair, playing for clubs such as Tottenham, AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund, while Jerome counts only Hamburg and Bayern Munich among the teams he has represented.

Interestingly, the two players play for different national teams, with Kevin-Prince switching allegiance to Ghana, while Jerome stayed with Germany.

They actually faced off against one another at the World Cup in 2010.

The Cannavaro family produced two teak-tough defenders in the form of Fabio and Paolo.

Both began their careers at Napoli before moving on to Parma, but Fabio's career took a sharp upward turn thereafter.

He subsequently represented Inter, Real Madrid and Juventus, winning the Ballon d'Or in 2006 after captaining Italy to a World Cup.

Paolo's career wasn't quite as glittering, but he established himself as a fan favourite at Napoli.

They are currently working together as coaches at Chinese Super League side Guangzhou Evergrande.

Jack and Bobby Charlton were team-mates in England's 1966 World Cup-winning side.

First-born Jack spent his career at Leeds United, while Bobby is a Manchester United icon.

Dutch twins Ronald and Frank de Boer played much of their careers together.

They rose through the ranks at Ajax and enjoyed tremendous success with the Amsterdam club, winning five Eredivisie titles and a Champions League.

The De Boer brothers subsequently played alongside one another at Barcelona, Rangers, Al-Rayyan, Al-Shamal and at international level for the Netherlands.

Brothers Siem and Luuk de Jong have gone head to head over the years in the Netherlands.

Siem is more of an Ajax stalwart, while Luuk has become an icon at PSV.

AC Milan have not one, but two Donnarumma goalkeepers on their books.

Gianluigi is the one that most people will be familiar with given his reputation as a rising star in the game, but his older brother Antonio has returned to the club after a spell with Genoa.

Antonio is eight years older than Gianluigi, but firmly behind his younger brother in the pecking order at San Siro.

Mexico's Dos Santos brothers famously came through the ranks at Barcelona together before heading their separate ways, though not for long.

Giovani, the eldest, has had a more varied career and counts Tottenham, Galatasaray, Villarreal and LA Galaxy among the teams he has played for.

Jonathan, meanwhile, has never strayed too far from his brother, playing for Villarreal and now LA Galaxy.

Both players have been regular internationals for their country.

Brothers Rio and Anton Ferdinand crossed paths on a number of occasions during their careers, but never played together professionally.

Both players graduated from West Ham's youth ranks, but Rio's career saw him win trophies with Manchester United and compete at three World Cups with England.

While Anton's career wasn't as glittering as his brother's, he spent the bulk of his career in the Premier League with the likes of Sunderland and Queens Park Rangers.

The Gotze family may only have one World Cup winner among their number, but there are three footballers in total.

Mario, of course, fired Germany to success in 2014 and is the most famous of the trio. He is the middle of the three, coming after Fabian, whose career didn't quite take off after leaving Borussia Dortmund, and before Felix, who recently joined Augsburg from Bayern Munich.

Fabian and Felix are defenders, while Mario is an attacking midfielder.

Belgium boasts a dynasty of Hazards, with Eden, Thorgan and Kylian all plying their trade with some of Europe's biggest clubs.

Eden, who plays for Chelsea, is the oldest and best known of the three. Thorgan plays for Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga, while Kylian, the youngest, is also on the books at Chelsea.

Eden and Thorgan have played together for the Belgium national team.

French defenders Lucas and Theo Hernandez find themselves on opposites sides of the divide in Madrid.

Having both started out at Atletico Madrid, Theo departed for city rivals Real in 2017 as he sought to carve out his own path.

Both players have represented France at international level, but only Lucas can claim to be a World Cup winner, having helped Les Bleus to success in 2018.

Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in football, playing for the likes of Real Madrid, Napoli, Juventus, AC Milan and now Chelsea.

El Pipita is not the only one in the family involved in the game, though. His older brother, Federico, plays for Columbus Crew in MLS and his eldest brother Nicolas acts as his agent.

Uli and Dieter Hoeness both enjoyed impressive careers in the Bundesliga and also represented Germany at international level.

Uli, the elder, won three European Cups and three Bundesligas with Bayern Munich in the 1970s, as well as winning the World Cup and European Championship with Germany.

When Uli left Bayern, Dieter joined them (after spells at Aalen and Stuttgart) and won five German titles, though had to make do with being a runner up in the European Cup and World Cup.

The Inzaghi brothers - Filippo and Simone - knew how to hit the back of the net.

Both players were strikers during their playing careers, but the trajectory of Filippo's career transcended that of Simone.

Filippo starred at club level for Parma, Atalanta, Juventus and AC Milan. He won three Serie A titles during his career and clinched two Champions Leagues with Milan. He also got his hands on a World Cup with Italy in 2006.

Simone, on the other hand, was a stalwart for Lazio and, while he was never first choice for Italy, did represent the Azzurri on three occasions.

Both Simone and Filippo have gone into coaching - Simone with his beloved Lazio, while Filippo has been at the helm of Milan, Venezia and Bologna.

There were two Khediras on the books of Stuttgart at one point, with Sami and Rani making their way through the ranks.

Sami is the elder of the two by six years and is a hard act to follow having won trophies with Real Madrid and Juventus, not to mention a World Cup with Germany.

Rani has quietly gone about his business in the shadow of his brother and is now playing for Augsburg after a spell at RB Leipzig.

Toni Kroos is a household name who has won four Champions League titles across spells with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid as well as a World Cup with Germany.

However, he's not the only famous footballer in the family, with his younger brother Felix also forging a living in the game.

Like Toni, Felix began his career at Hansa Rostock before moving on to Werder Bremen. He is now playing for Union Berlin.

France and Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has a brother who is also a professional footballer.

Gautier Lloris is nine years Hugo's junior, but has started out at the same point as his older brother, at Nice.

A defender, the junior Lloris spent time on loan in Ligue 2 at Ajaccio in 2017-18 and is attempting to force his way into the Cote d'Azure side's first team.

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku isn't the only one in his family to carve out a career in football.

The Red Devils forward is the older brother of Jordan Lukaku, who is plying his trade in Serie A with Lazio.

Both players have represented their country at senior international level.

Liverpool centre-back Joel Matip followed the same path as his older brother Marvin in becoming a professional footballer.

Six years between them, both came through their hometown club Bochum in Germany and Marvin subsequently joined Cologne, while Joel signed for Schalke.

While they were both born in Germany, Joel and Marvin opted to represent Cameroon at international level.

Milito brothers Diego and Gabriel were both highly successful in their playing careers.

Diego, the eldest, was a striker and the star player for Inter in their 2010 Champions League triumph. He also represented Racing Club, Zaragoza, Genoa and Argentina.

Defender Gabriel also played for Argentina, as well as Barcelona and Zaragoza. Interestingly, however, while Diego played for Racing, Gabriel represented their arch rivals, Independiente.

Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United team of the 1990s and 2000s famously featured the Neville brothers, Gary and Phil.

Both players were defenders (though Phil eventually moved into midfield) and enjoyed fruitful careers, which included lining up for England together.

After hanging up their boots they each moved into coaching and were briefly reunited professionally in a stint at the helm of Valencia.

Twin brothers Ryan and Steven Sessegnon have been making a name for themselves at Fulham, though Ryan is the more established of the pair.

Both players can play at full-back or on the wing and they have each represented England at various international levels.

Brazil internationals Socrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira and Rai Souza Vieira de Oliveira, otherwise known as Socrates and Rai, were brothers.

There was quite a difference in age between them, with Socrates being born around 11 years before Rai, but they scaled similar heights.

Socrates played for Botafogo, Corinthians, Fiorentina and Flamengo, with his international career taking him to two World Cups.

Rai also played for Botafogo, but made a name for himself at Paris Saint-Germain and Sao Paulo. He played in just one World Cup - 1994 - and tasted success, unlike his older brother.

Ivory Coast's Toure brothers, Kolo and Yaya, are among the country's most successful exports.

Kolo rose to prominence first with Arsenal, but Yaya eventually caught up with his older sibling, joining Barcelona after impressing for Metalurh Donetsk, Olympiakos and Monaco.

They played alongside one another at Manchester City and even have a specific song dedicated to them.

Christian Vieri is widely regarded as one of the greatest Italian strikers of all time, which means that he casts a long shadow over his younger brother Massimiliano.

While 'Bobo' excelled for Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Lazio and Inter, 'Max' was more of a journeyman, whotoiled for the likes of Ancona, Verona, Napoli and Ternana.

They diverged at international level as well, with Christian scoring 23 goals in 49 Italy appearances, while Massimiliano declared for Australia.

Granit and Taulant Xhaka were both born in Basel, Switzerland and made their breakthrough with their hometown club.

However, while Granit went on to play for Switzerland at senior level, Taulant opted to switch allegiance to Albania.

Like the Boateng brothers in the 2010 World Cup, the Xhakas ended up on opposing sides at Euro 2016. They have also faced off at club level in the Champions League.
