Hazard to Real Madrid, Maguire to Man Utd and 10 PL transfers that failed to happen this summer

Jose Mourinho was adamant that he needed an extra body in the centre of defence going into 2018-19 and Alderweireld was seen as an experienced head who could help to bring on the likes of Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof to the next stage of their careers.

But United's attempt to penny-pinch in negotiations early in the summer meant the deal dragging out and, even when they thought they had a deal, Tottenham's inactivity helped to put the kibosh on the transfer.

Manchester City made Napoli midfielder Jorginho their primary transfer target this summer and a deal looked to be close to closure. City manager Pep Guardiola was left furious, however, as the Italian joined Maurizio Sarri at Premier League rivals Chelsea.

The Manchester club believed that Jorginho had been "bullied" into moving to Stamford Bridge rather than the Etihad by Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis. City had agreed terms with both the player and his club a fortnight beforehand but were left astounded by what they viewed as "an unprecedented level of unprofessionalism" when De Laurentiis reneged on the deal.

Following his exceptional performances at the World Cup, United were convinced that Maguire could produce at the top level with regularity and sought him out as an alternative to Toby Alderweireld.

Unfortunately for them, Leicester refused to countenance the departure of the centre-back and United faced a brick wall in their pursuit of the former Sheffield United and Hull City man.

A deal was done. Following intense transfer discussions between Liverpool and Lyon, Fekir was on the verge of a £53 million switch to Anfield, had agreed personal terms, and had even selected his shirt number for the season ahead.

News that Fekir had failed his medical were denied by those in France, who claimed it was a time issue rather than a physical one. "Nabil was close to Liverpool, I gave the green light on the move. It didn't happen because it was taking too much time. Nabil is an exceptional player," Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas said following the collapse.

Real Madrid's enquiries into signing Hazard were repeatedly knocked back by Chelsea as the Spanish giants searched for a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo. A fee similar to the one that took Neymar from Barcelona to PSG, around €222 million, may have been required to begin the dialogue, something which couldn't be agreed during the summer window.

Madrid wanted the move, Hazard wanted the move, and it would have gone through if Chelsea had accepted a lower starting fee.

Maurizio Sarri highlighted Daniele Rugani as a main transfer target ahead of the summer deadline having worked with the centre-back at Empoli in Italy. Goal reported that Chelsea CEO Marina Granovskaia met with Juve sporting director Fabio Paratici in relation to a €50 million move, though the Italian champions decided they did not want to sell.

"Chelsea made a really big bid, which was close to being unthinkable for me, but Juventus didn't relent," his agent said. 

Alisson's performances for Roma throughout the 2017-18 Serie A campaign saw him emerge as one of the most sought-after goalkeepers in European football. Including those that were interested in the summer were Chelsea, with the Brazil international becoming Chelsea's first choice option to replace Thibaut Courtois.

Alisson chose to sign a for Liverpool, however, in a deal worth £67 million to the Italian outfit.

Barcelona struggled to agree a fee with Chelsea in regards to transfer for Willian and subsequently turned their attention to Bordeaux's Malcom, who proved to be more than £20m cheaper than what the a Blues asked for their Brazilian.

Willian later revealed details of the move before comitting his future to the London club.

Aston Villa midfielder Grealish was highlighted as Tottenham's summer marquee signing as Mauricio Pochettino looked to tweak his squad ahead of the new season. Spurs were unable to agree a transfer fee, however, despite repeatedly making contact with the Midlands club, seeing a £25 million offer rejected following a change of owners.

Grealish has expressed his disappointment that the two parties couldn't come to an agreement but a new deal at Villa Park may now be on the cards following the change in powers.

Chelsea had an agreement for CSKA Moscow midfielder Golovin in place, but Monaco were chosen by Russia's World Cup star due to their persuasive development argument.

Golovin felt the move to the Ligue 1 club, famed for developing young players, suited him better as he became one of the few Russia players to make the move away from his home country.
