'Why would you want to upset that?!' - Harry Kane urged to stay at Bayern Munich long-term as ex-Tottenham star gives two reasons why England captain should snub 2026 transfer

  • Release clause: How much it will cost to sign Kane

It has been reported that Kane could be prised away from the Allianz Arena next summer for around £57 million ($76m). That is a lot of money for a man that will turn 33 on his next birthday, but there has been no sign of him slowing down. On the back of becoming a Bundesliga title winner in Germany, Kane has passed the 100-goal mark for Bayern.

Any team in world football would like to call upon such a reliable source of end product, with plenty said to be mulling over their options when it comes to Kane. A return to the Premier League has been mooted, allowing Kane to chase down Alan Shearer’s all-time goal record, while La Liga heavyweights Barcelona and Real Madrid have seen their names thrown into the mix.

Europe or MLS? Kane offered transfer advice

There has also been talk of Kane heading to MLS at some stage, having never hidden his desire to pursue a potential future career in the NFL. It could be that ex-England captain David Beckham looks to put a deal in place for Inter Miami - with Lionel Messi having agreed a contract extension there through 2028.

Quizzed on whether that is a path that Kane should be looking to tread, former Spurs and England midfielder Murphy - speaking in association with online casino BetWright - told GOAL: "I wouldn’t put it out of the question. At the moment, because he is playing so well and he looks so good in a World Cup year, he is probably not thinking too much ahead of that.

"The thing that is always difficult when you get older is to think too far ahead because we’ve all been there when the body doesn’t work the same. If I was around Kane and had any influence on him, I wouldn’t be encouraging him to go anywhere because at the moment, in this Munich team, they look like they have got a real chance in the Champions League. He is playing as well as we have ever seen him play. Why would you want to upset that?"

  • American dream: Kane urged to remain in Europe for now

Another former Tottenham star - one who did play in MLS towards the end of his career - has also advised Kane to delay any chasing of the American dream. Jermain Defoe previously told GOAL: "He loves the NFL doesn’t he. I don’t know. It’s whatever he wants to do. But I would say, ‘of course play as long as you can’. The reason he has said that [he wants to play towards his 40s] is because he wants to break all the records. He’s hungry to break records. Even individual ones are special.

"Of course you want to win trophies for your club, win a league title, win the Champions League, a trophy with England – whether that is the World Cup or the Euros – and we just hope it happens for him because he deserves it. He’s had to wait a long time. It’s whatever he wants to do. Hopefully he doesn’t have too many injuries and he can play for a long time."

Defoe added: "I feel like he can still score goals. Look at how many goals he has got at Bayern. I don’t think he needs to think about that [MLS] yet. When I went to Toronto, I felt like I went too early. I came back and went to Sunderland, then signed for Bournemouth, went to Rangers and finished at 39. Harry is 32. He’s got years yet. Touch wood he doesn’t get too many serious injuries. There are a lot of goals in him yet."

One more move: Kane settled but open to offers

Kane has hit 22 goals through 13 appearances for club and country this season. He has moved on to 76 efforts for England, with a century of strikes beginning to loom into view, and will captain the Three Lions at next summer’s World Cup.

He has spoken on a regular basis of how happy he and his family are in Germany, with wife Kate and their four children feeling settled in Bavaria, but he may have only one more big move left in him and another enticing offer could convince him to spread professional wings once more.
