Transfer imminent?! Hansi Flick explains Alejandro Balde shock omission amid left-back's decision to leave as Barcelona crush Elche 5-0 in La Liga opener

Balde was left out of Barcelona's squad for their La Liga opener against Elche on Sunday, with Flick admitting the defender was not fully focused amid mounting transfer speculation.

The omission raised eyebrows given Balde's importance to Barcelona, but Flick suggested the decision was made with the player's state of mind in mind. The left-back has been linked with Manchester United, Aston Villa, and Benfica after reportedly informing the club of his desire to leave. Barca ultimately made a perfect start to their title defence, thrashing Elche 5-0.

Flick revealed that he had spoken to Balde on the morning of the match and felt the Spain international needed to resolve his situation before returning to the team.

"We have to manage the minutes, I hope to have six players who can play 90 minutes," Flick told reporters ahead of the match. "I spoke with Balde this morning and told him that I think he's not here at 100 per cent, clear your mind and then we'll talk."

Flick had previously stressed that Balde's quality was not in question, but insisted every player must be completely committed to competing for their place. He said: "He’s a player of immense quality, and it’s important to know if he’s confident he can compete in his position. That’s what I want to see from all my players. Every day I observe what they do, their level, whether they demonstrate that they’re at the level to play."

The Red Devils have been searching for defensive reinforcements after a difficult start to the season, initially targeting Newcastle's Lewis Hall before turning their attention towards the Barcelona full-back.

Balde's situation is also complicated by increased competition at left-back following Joao Cancelo's return to the Catalan club. The La Masia graduate started 21 La Liga matches last season but missed 10 games because of hamstring and muscle problems.

Despite the speculation, Flick's decision does not necessarily signal the end of Balde's Barcelona career. His comments suggest the door remains open if the defender can regain his focus and commit to the club.

While Balde watched from the sidelines, Barcelona's attack provided plenty of encouragement for Flick. Anthony Gordon made an immediate impact on his debut after coming off the bench in the second half, producing two assists in just five minutes as the champions dismantled Elche.

Karim Adeyemi also scored on his Barcelona debut, while Gordon's two assists matched his entire Premier League tally from the previous campaign with Newcastle.

Barcelona now turn their attention to Athletic Club, who visit Camp Nou on Thursday. Flick will hope Gavi's first-half injury against Elche is not serious, while Balde's next step could provide another storyline as Barca attempt to build momentum.
