  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Reyna's time at Forest can be described as a failed venture. And now the club has confirmed that the player has been released and is set to head back to Dortmund.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The decision to loan Reyna to Forest was reportedly driven significantly by his father, former U.S. international Claudio Reyna. Despite initial reluctance from Borussia Dortmund and Reyna's former agency, Wasserman Media Group, Claudio advocated strongly for the move. It is believed that the club's manager, Nuno Espirito Santo, was seen as a supportive figure in the move. Both Nuno and Reyna share the same agent, Jorge Mendes, which was a significant factor in the decision. Reyna chose Forest over interest from clubs like Marseille, Sevilla, and Wolves, banking on the relationship with Nuno to facilitate his integration and success.

  • WHAT NOTTINGHAM FOREST SAID

Forest released a statement which read: "The loan deals of Gonzalo Montiel, Divock Origi, Gio Reyna, Rodrigo Ribeiro and Nuno Tavares have come to an end following the conclusion of the season."

The club also shared other updates about contracts and transfers. They wrote: "Six senior players’ contracts have come to an end: Harry Arter, Wayne Hennessey, Cheikhou Kouyaté, Loïc Mbe Soh, Scott McKenna and Felipe, with the latter also announcing his retirement from football.

"McKenna departs The City Ground having made 106 appearances for Forest, playing an integral part in helping The Reds win promotion to the Premier League from the Championship during the 2021/22 campaign. Seven academy players will also depart the club as they embark on fresh chapters ahead of the 2024/25 season: Kevin Adueni, Tony Gbopo, Ethan Hull, Ateef Konaté, Henry Lister, Elijah Morgan and Theo Robinson.

"Willy Boly has signed a new one-year contract with the club, with the club holding an extension option for a second year, whilst the club has also triggered a one-year extension option in Ola Aina’s contract."
