Gianluigi Donnarumma says moving to Man City was his 'only option' despite Man Utd transfer links

Donnarumma played a vital role in guiding PSG to Champions League glory in late May, as the 26-year-old cemented his reputation as one of the world's best keepers. But on transfer deadline day, he secured a sudden switch to City, with the French champions alleging that the 6ft 5in stopper wanted wages above their payment structure. But it seems he has moved on from that episode quickly after making his City debut.

He said, via BBC Sport: "I was very clear, my desire was to come here. That was my only option, the only thing I wanted. My only choice was to come here... so I am happy to be here at City and be part of this fantastic team. Before the summer, I knew that City were very interested in me, the relationship strengthened after the Club World Cup. I knew the coach was pushing for my arrival here, everyone wanted me here, it gave me such pride to see such a demonstration of affection. I didn't hesitate to come here with great joy and enthusiasm."

The Italian added: "It feels like I have been here for many years, the way they welcomed me."

The Italy international was credited with interest from United but instead, they stuck with Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir, before swooping for Antwerp's Senne Lammens. The former AC Milan man is one of the best shot-stoppers in the game, however, his ball-playing skills have been called into question. Guardiola requires his keepers to play out from the back but it seems his positives outweigh those negatives. 

The big keeper, who made his City debut in their 3-0 win over rivals United last weekend, is likely to start in goal against Napoli in the Cityzens' Champions League opener on Thursday. They then travel to Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday.
