'Football keeps him out of trouble' - Coleen Rooney devastated after Plymouth sack Man Utd legend Wayne

Having previously spent just 83 days and 15 games in charge of Birmingham, Manchester United legend Rooney has left his role at Home Park after claiming only five wins from 25 matches. News of his departure was confirmed on New Year’s Eve.

Rooney had been hoping to rebuild his managerial reputation with the Pilgrims, as he eyes bigger jobs further down the line, but the ex-England captain continues to be pushed back to square one. That is proving to a be source of frustration for all concerned – including members of his immediate family.

An insider has told the Daily Mail of how wife Coleen will have responded to Wayne’s latest failure in the dugout: “Coleen was so keen for Wayne's managerial career to work out. She knows how much he wanted it and she knows how much he loves football. On the outside, life for the Rooneys is all fancy restaurants, vodka cocktails and expensive clothes, but actually football is so important to Wayne. It keeps him busy. She worries about him, and football keeps him out of trouble.”

The source went on to say, with Wayne and Coleen reported to have signed up for a fly-on-the-wall documentary series that lifts the lid on their private life: “Football is central to the Rooneys' daily lives. The boys love it, and Coleen is always ferrying them around to their matches. OK she has no choice, but she absolutely loves it. Part of the charm of the show [would be] Wayne's successes as a manager, but now it seems he will be getting under her feet rather than being a football coach.”

While the plan was for Wayne to spend more time away from the Rooney’s family base in Cheshire, as he made 10-hour round trips from Devon once a week in order to see his wife and four sons, plans can now be drawn up for what happens next.

The Mail’s source added, with it possible that Rooney will now look for a coaching role closer to home: “[Coleen] misses him. They have been through so much, but she adores him.” There has already been talk of Wayne returning to punditry after seeing another spell on the touchline cut short.
