'It wasn't an easy decision' - Florian Wirtz admits he had to think deeply about Liverpool move before making huge £116m switch from Bayer Leverkusen amid rival Bayern Munich interest

Liverpool secured Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth an initial £100m, potentially rising to £116m with add-ons, making him one of the most expensive signings in British football. Bayern Munich were confident of landing the German international but were left stunned when Wirtz chose Anfield.

Speaking to the German outlet kicker, Wirtz said about his Liverpool move (h/t Sky Germany): "Just like five years ago, when I left Cologne for Leverkusen at 16, I was looking for where I could best develop my football skills and where I could become the most successful player. That's why I chose Liverpool – and I haven't regretted it yet."

On the difficulty of his choice: "I've already looked into both clubs very intensively, and in the end, it wasn't an easy decision. But I made it with 100 per cent conviction, and I'm happy about it."

On moving to the Premier League: "It was the more difficult step to leave that whole environment [Germany] and go to another country with all the changes. And to a new league with a different style of play. I would definitely say that it's a bigger challenge, one I consciously chose to overcome and become a better player."

On the pressure of his price tag: "Of course, the fans expect a bit more than when the club signs a player for little money. But I'm not putting any pressure on myself; I'm just trying to do my best, no matter how much money I'm signed for. That's the way it is now, and it will always be that way."

Wirtz’s arrival represents a major coup for Liverpool as they continue to reshape their squad under Arne Slot. The German international is regarded as one of the brightest young talents in Europe, having twice been named Germany’s best player.
