  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Haaland endured a difficult evening against Arsenal on Sunday, with the home crowd and even some of the players choosing to taunt the prolific forward. Gabriel Magalhaes laughed in Haaland’s face following an early goal by Martin Odegaard. Whereas, later in the game, Myles Lewis-Skelly replicated Haaland’s famous zen celebration to ridicule the forward.

To round off the night, Arsenal’s stadium DJ added a final touch of mockery by playing Kendrick Lamar’s hit song “Humble” over the stadium speakers - a clear reference to Haaland’s previous remark towards Mikel Arteta to "stay humble" when the two sides settled for a 2-2 draw in September.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

After the final whistle, Arsenal’s official X account (formerly Twitter) joined in on the banter by posting a celebratory image of Nwaneri’s pose, captioned simply with "This Team". The post quickly gained traction among fans, celebrating the team’s victory.

However, Alfie Haaland, a former City player who represented the club between 2000 and 2003, responded sarcastically by commenting: "This Team that wins everything. Ehhhhh, not."

His comment was a direct dig at Arsenal’s struggles in recent years, as they continue their long wait for a Premier League title, having last lifted the trophy in 2004.

  • WHAT ALAN SMITH SAID

Alfie Haaland’s remarks did not sit well with Alan Smith, a former Arsenal striker and television pundit. Speaking about the incident on the Seamus Says Pod with Betway, Smith didn’t hold back in his response: "Haaland’s dad had a little chip, didn't he? On social media, saying, 'Oh, yeah, all those trophies you've won' or something like that. I thought, 'Oh, leave it'. It's just funny! By the way, Alf-Inge, you didn't win much! Back in your box. You can't live your life through your son, you know. It was a great moment, wasn’t it? Those kinds of things are great."

WHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER CITY & ARSENAL?

For Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, the defeat at Arsenal was another setback in their Premier League title defence. Their next challenge comes in the FA Cup fourth round, where they will face Leyton Orient away from home on Saturday. Meanwhile, Arsenal will look to bounce back from their Carabao Cup exit as they prepare to host Leicester City in their next Premier League fixture on February 15.
