While the result of a scan on his injury is awaited, the goalkeeper is likely to be ruled out of action for up to five months, according to journalist Mike McGrath.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Spaniard has been without a club since he left the Red Devils in the summer after his contract expired. He was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia during the last transfer window with Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr reportedly showing interest in him. Lionel Messi's Inter Miami too were rumoured to be interest but neither move materialised.

Amid a possibility of returning to the Premier League, De Gea also has an offer from Steven Gerrard's Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League.

    DID YOU KNOW?

Pope has managed to keep the most number of clean sheets in the current Premier League season, six, one more than Manchester United's Andre Onana.

The injury comes as a huge blow for both the club and the player as it will also hurt his chances of making England's Euro 2024 squad.
