'No words of comfort' - Darwin Nunez posts tribute to Diogo Jota on social media after Liverpool team-mate dies in car crash

Jota tied the knot with his long-time girlfriend Rute Cardoso on June 22, with the couple sharing three young children. Tributes poured in following the confirmation of the tragic news. Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo mourned the death of his compatriot, while Nunez shared a heartfelt social media post.

On Instagram, the Uruguayan forward wrote: "There are no words of comfort for so much pain. I will always remember you with your smile, as a good companion on and off the field. I send all my strength to his family, from where he is, I'm sure he will always be with you, especially his wife and three children. May he rest in peace. Diogo and Andre."

Jota enjoyed a successful 2024-25 campaign, where he scored nine goals across all competitions and played an important role in the Merseyside club winning the Premier League title. He then featured for Portugal in the Nations League final against Spain and emerged victorious as the Selecao won the title for the second time in history.

The UEFA have announced a moment of silence will be observed in all the Women's European Championship matches on Thursday and Friday as a mark of respect for Jota.
