    WHAT HAPPENED?

As Cruz Azul prepare for a decisive semifinal clash against Tigres in the Concacaf Champions Cup, both players and coaching staff are brimming with confidence, emotion, and purpose. La Máquina will host Tigres on Thursday with the aggregate score tied 1-1. While a goalless draw would send Cruz Azul through on the away goals rule, head coach Vicente Sánchez is not relying on that advantage, especially against such a potent attacking side.

"The feeling is one of happiness, joy, and great excitement about reaching the final," said Sánchez ahead of the second leg. "It’s going to be a beautiful game to watch, and we’re thrilled to be closing it out at home with our fans. We’re very happy and fully prepared for the match."

Midfielder Carlos Rodríguez echoed the sentiment, stressing the team’s determined mindset. "In the end, peace of mind comes only if you win the game. The away goal counts, but it’s just one goal. We’re going to be aggressive from the start and look for the win," he stated. "It’s going to be just as intense as the first leg."

"It’s a hugely important game - a ticket to the final against a strong opponent, very well coached. Still, at Cruz Azul, every game is important, and we always go out to win," Sánchez emphasized.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

It’s been four years since Cruz Azul last lifted a trophy - the Guard1anes 2021 Liga MX title. Now, the team is eyeing a return to the cusp of championship glory, with Thursday offering the perfect chance to reclaim that status.

Sánchez and his squad are riding an impressive 15-match unbeaten streak - a testament to their growth and consistency under his leadership. Ironically, their last defeat came on Feb. 15 - against none other than Tigres.

    WHAT CARLOS RODRÍGUEZ SAID

Off the pitch, Rodríguez addressed recent speculation surrounding his contract renewal.

"We’ve had good talks, and I’m happy here. The club has given me everything. I’ve grown a lot as a person and player, and I hope to stay here for a long time," he shared before adding. You always chase dreams and goals — one of mine is to play in Europe."

    DID YOU KNOW?

Adding to the intrigue of this semifinal is the duel between two rookie coaches. Vicente Sánchez, who took over Cruz Azul’s first team at the start of the Clausura 2025 after Martín Anselmi's departure, began coaching the club’s U-21 side in 2023 following a brief return to the pitch in the USL. On the other bench, Tigres’ Guido Pizarro only officially retired as a player in March 2025 and assumed the managerial role without prior coaching experience.
