Champions League Power Rankings: Which teams have a realistic chance of winning?

Valencia may seem the least likely of all the Spanish sides to win the Champions League, but they did top a difficult group that included Chelsea and last season's semi-finalists Ajax.

Los Che were also gifted possibly the easiest draw of the last 16 against Italian debutants Atalanta. Established names like Rodrigo and rising stars Goncalo Guedes and Maxi Gomez have the quality to cause problems to any defence and Valencia could be the surprise team of this year's Champions League.

An incredible run to last season's final looked like a once-in-a-lifetime experience when Spurs were humiliated by Bayern Munich in this season's group stage, but Jose Mourinho is the master of taking underdogs through the knockout stages with Champions League successes at unfancied Porto and Inter on his CV.

There's plenty of quality in his squad and a draw against knockout new boys Leipzig could be the launchpad for another epic European journey.

Pep Guardiola's side remain the bookmakers' favourites for the trophy but a last-16 draw against record winners Real Madrid is a big test.

City have been outstanding domestically for two seasons but have struggled to maintain their form this campaign, shipping a worrying number of goals. Key defender Aymeric Laporte should be back for the trip to the Bernabeu, however, which will help them tighten up at the back.

A third consecutive Premier League title is already looking out of reach and the focus may well switch to Europe and a first ever Champions League trophy. If playmaker Kevin De Bruyne maintains his current form, anything is possible.

Will this finally be the year when Europe's serial under-achievers make a serious challenge for the Champions League?

Despite regularly having one of the most talented squads, they have never got beyond the quarter-finals. There's no doubting they have the quality in Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Mauro Icardi to beat anyone - and five wins from a group that included Real Madrid suggests that Thomas Tuchel may have come up with a plan to take on Europe's best.

A last 16 draw against Borussia Dortmund will give them an early test.

Cristiano Ronaldo always comes alive in the Champions League and he's the main reason why Juve must be considered among the favourites for this season's trophy. The Portuguese forward has been struggling for form this season but don't bet against him finding it in the knockout stages.

Juve breezed through a potentially difficult group, which included Atletico and Bayer Leverkusen and a kind last 16 draw against Lyon gives them every opportunity of a place in the quarter-finals.  

Bayern might not be in their usually reserved spot at the top of the Bundesliga - indeed, they are currently outside the top-four - but even lying six points behind Leipzig, who would bet against them finishing top at the end of the season?

They have the most in-form striker in Europe in Robert Lewandowski, Manuel Neuer remains one of the best goalkeepers of recent times and midfielder Phillipe Coutinho is beginning to show his quality.

A double over last season's finalists Tottenham, including a 7-2 victory away from home, fired a warning that they cannot be ignored. No team in the modern history of the Champions League has ever completed a better group stage than Bayern, with 18 points taken from 18 and a goal difference of 19.

It's now five seasons since Barca last won the Champions League and a victory is long overdue by their standards. Their exit last year was careless when they froze at Liverpool and let a three-goal advantage slip out of their hands.

While Barca aren't quite at their imposing best, 16 victories from their last 19 matches suggests they remain one of the most dangerous sides in Europe. In Lionel Messi, they still possess the best player on the planet and a man who can kill off any opponents' Champions League dreams with a flash of genius.

It's Napoli up next for the Catalans.

A first Premier League title remains the priority for Jurgen Klopp's side and they should be well on the way to securing that when the knockout stages restart in February.

Liverpool will have the belief that they can retain their Champions League title and no one will to travel to Anfield with confidence, particularly after the way they overturned a three-goal deficit to Barca in last season's competition.

Liverpool could confirm themselves at the best team in the world this month and if they can stay injury-free, they will be very difficult to stop again.
