  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Dortmund are set to complete a double raid on Chelsea, having already announced the signing of Chukwuemeka on a permanent deal worth €25 million (£21m/$27m) and with Aaron Anselmino expected to join on a season-long loan. The 21-year-old midfielder penned a contract until 2030 after impressing during his loan spell last season, while 20-year-old Anselmino will arrive for a €5m fee without a purchase option.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chukwuemeka’s signing gives Die Borussen a young and dynamic midfield option who has already proven his ability in key moments. His arrival, however, contrasts with the more cautious outlook on Anselmino, who is expected to provide depth rather than an immediate fix. With injuries continuing to trouble the backline, Dortmund’s defensive struggles remain one of the biggest questions of their season.

  • WHAT MATTHAUS SAID

"You can't expect a youth player like Aaron Anselmino, who's coming on loan from Chelsea, to suddenly make Dortmund's defence more stable", ex-Bayern Munich and Germany star Matthaus wrote in a column for Sky

"Returning player Carney Chukwuemeka, in my opinion, has a high level of quality; I'm enthusiastic about this player. He's a great player for the midfield. I told Kehl personally: 'I'd love to see him in the Bundesliga'. But of course, Chukwuemeka won't be able to solve BVB's defensive problems. Once all the injured center-backs are back, Borussia will be very well positioned there as well."

    WHAT NEXT FOR DORTMUND?

Chukwuemeka is expected to slot straight into Dortmund’s midfield setup and could feature in their next Bundesliga outing. Anselmino’s involvement may depend on the fitness of the club’s injured centre-backs, with his role likely limited to covering gaps in the short term. After their frustrating 3-3 draw against St. Pauli on the opening matchday of the Bundesliga, Dortmund will now look to get back on track when they face Union Berlin on Sunday at Signal Iduna Park.
