    THE BIGGER PICTURE

It appeared this long-running transfer story was reaching a conclusion last week, after reports suggested the Old Trafford club would meet Brentford's valuation, in excess of £60 million ($81m). United are believed to have had three approaches rebuffed by the Bees. Their latest offer was for a reported initial fee of £55m ($74.5m), plus £5m ($7m) in add-ons.

  • WHAT BESONG SAID

Besong said: "Yes, obviously he’s very frustrated with how long it’s taken. But he’s a professional and anticipates these things.

"I spoke to him about a week ago and he is very calm with everything that is going on. But of course, he’s already told them he wants to go to United.

"He just wanted the two clubs to find an agreement, as he’s very grateful for the opportunity that he’s been given by Brentford in his career."

    WHAT NEXT FOR MBEUMO?

Mbeumo has not returned to west London for pre-season training, which suggests Brentford do still expect the player to depart. The Red Devils' players are also back in training. Both Mbeumo and his suitors would have liked to secure the transfer before preparations for the new term kicked off in earnest, but plenty of time remains in the window for United to secure their man.
