Brazil legend Marta sets retirement date as she admits 2027 Women's World Cup is 'not an objective'

Marta initially announced back in April that 2024 would be her final year in Brazil's famous colours and she went out on a somewhat unexpected high, as the Selecao upset the odds to reach the gold medal match at the Olympic Games, though they did fall short in the final, losing 1-0 to the United States.

However, while it appears that Marta, now 38 years old, is hopeful of playing on for her country for a little while longer yet, and there is little doubt in her ability to thrive at the top level with her having just helped the Orlando Pride win its first-ever NWSL Championship, playing at the 2027 Women's World Cup is not something she is striving towards.

"I've said several times that my goal is not to play in the World Cup, but at the same time I want to continue contributing to the team," Marta told ESPN Brasil. "It has to be something natural, I have to deserve it. It's not an objective as a player. Not that I don't feel capable of playing, but then we're talking about 2027.

"I want to play for a couple more years. But I want to play in a light way, not have this weight that I've carried all my life from being at club and national team. I'm living a magical moment in my career. I never imagined at 38 years old I would be feeling good, playing well, winning titles. Situations like this motivate you and I have in mind to continue playing for another two years."

Marta has been left out of the Brazil squad for both of the international breaks that have taken place since the Olympics, with head coach Arthur Elias explaining: "I want to take advantage of the two FIFA dates this year to get to know young players, have the opportunity to see them up close, and determine if they can be included in the squad for the 2025 Copa America and the 2027 World Cup."

Giving chances to the next generation is something Marta has long been vocal about, with her explaining on this occasion: "I believe in Elias' work. Taking younger players, that you have to test, that you have to give opportunities to. We have a very good base. I will always be willing to help, if not as a player, as an advisor, being close to them. It's my life regardless of whether I play or not."

Brazil will next be in action in the February international break, though no official fixtures for that window have been announced yet. The next games formally on the Selecao's calendar are against the U.S, with them to face Emma Hayes' side in a double-header in April. Only time will tell whether or not Marta will be involved in either camp.
