Borussia Dortmund most expensive signings - How BVB spent more than €1 billion on incoming transfers

Borussia Dortmund have developed a bit of a reputation as the perfect stepping stone for young talents.

Buy them on the cheap, turn them into absolute superstars, and sell at a healthy profit.

Erling Haaland is probably the ultimate example of this strategy, but the same could be said about Jadon Sancho, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and many more. It's made BVB over €1 billion.

Not all of these superstars in the making were quite as cheap, though, as Dortmund have not hesitated to spend big if they felt the opportunity was right.

But how much exactly have Dortmund spent over the years and what have been their biggest deals each campaign?

Borussia Dortmund's top 10 most expensive player signings

  • NICO SCHULZ BORUSSIA DORTMUNDGetty Images

    10Nico Schulz | €25.5m | Hoffenheim | 2019

After some impressive performances for Hoffenheim and scoring for the German national team with a last-minute winner in the Euro 2020 qualifier against Netherlands in March 2019, Dortmund pounced on the opportunity to sign Schulz for €25.5 million.

He joined the club at the same time as two other stars in Julian Brandt and Thorgan Hazard.

Schulz has struggled to live up to the high expectations, though, and more often than not finds himself on the bench.

  • THORGAN HAZARD BORUSSIA DORTMUNDGetty Images

    9Thorgan Hazard | €25.5m | Borussia Monchengladbach | 2019

After a strong season at Monchengladbach in 2018-19, Dortmund signed Hazard in the summer of 2019, forking out €25.5m for the Belgian midfielder.

Hazard was in sublime form in his first season at Dortmund, coming up with 7 goals and 13 assists in the league, but after that, spells of inconsistency and injury affected his performances.

Question marks exist over whether the creative midfielder still has much of a role to play at BVB.

  • HENRIKH MKHITARYAN BORUSSIA DORTMUNDGetty Images

    8Henrikh Mkhitaryan | €27.5m | Shakhtar Donetsk | 2013

Dortmund took quite a risk when they splashed €27.5m for a player from Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer of 2013.

At that time, Mkhitaryan became the most-expensive transfer in Dortmund's history.

The gamble quickly paid off, though, as Mkhitaryan was one of their best players during his three years at the club, scoring 23 goals in 90 appearances before Manchester United came calling in 2016.

After selling Mkhitaryan to United for €42m, Dortmund even earned €14.5m on resale when he moved to Arsenal in 2018.

  • ABDOU DIALLO DORTMUNDGetty Images

    7Abdou Diallo | €28m | Mainz | 2018

Diallo played just one season for Borussia Dortmund after being signed on a five-year deal from Mainz in the summer of 2018 for €28m.

The centre-back said in an interview later that Ousmane Dembele influenced his decision and advised him to sign for Dortmund.

However, Diallo stuck around for just the one season at BVB as he was sold at a profit when Paris Saint-Germain offered €32m in 2019.

After three seasons in France, in the summer of 2022, PSG sent him on a season-long loan to Dortmund's domestic rivals RB Leipzig.

  • ANDRE SCHÜRRLE DORTMUNDGetty Images

    6Andre Schurrle | €30m | Wolfsburg | 2016

The star who assisted Mario Gotze for the winner in the 2014 World Cup final, Schurrle arrived at Dortmund from Wolfsburg in 2016 for €30m, making him the second most expensive signing in Dortmund's history at that time.

Unfortunately, he flopped at Dortmund, spending just two seasons at the club, before being loaned to Fulham and Spartak Moscow.

Schurrle announced his retirement from football in 2020 at the age of just 29 as he no longer wanted to face the loneliness and endless competition inherent to top-flight football.

  • DONYELL MALEN DORTMUNDGetty Images

    5Donyell Malen | €30m | PSV | 2021

Malen arrived at BVB from PSV in 2021 for €30m.

As a striker, he was understandably overshadowed by superstar Erling Haaland in his first season in the Bundesliga.

With five goals and six assists in the league, his debut campaign in Germany wasn't a complete failure, but more was expected from the Dutchman.

Currently in his second season at Dortmund - without Haaland - it remains to be seen if he can thrive in the German top flight.

  • KARIM ADEYEMI DORTMUNDGetty Images

    4Karim Adeyemi | €30m | Red Bull Salzburg | 2022

Dortmund won the race to sign the much sought-after Adeyemi in the summer of 2022 from Red Bull Salzburg for €30m.

Adeyemi was one of Salzburg's best players last season and scored 27 goals in 68 appearances throughout his time at the Austrian giants, while also making his debut for the national team in 2021.

  • MATS HUMMELS DORTMUNDGetty Images

    3Mats Hummels | €30.5m | Bayern Munich | 2019

After a three-year stint at Bayern Munich, Hummels returned to Borussia Dortmund in 2019 as they looked to strengthen their defence.

Dortmund ended up paying €30.5m for the experienced defender, who they had previously sold to Bayern for €35m in the summer of 2016.

In his first season back at his old club, Hummels helped them win the DFL Supercup, followed by winning the DFB Pokal in the 2020-21 season.

  • GER ONLY Sebastien HallerImago Images

    2Sebastien Haller | €31m | Ajax | 2022

After losing Haaland to Manchester City for €60m, Dortmund went ahead and spent a little over half of it on signing Haller from Ajax, paying €31m in the summer of 2022.

The Ivorian has been going through one of the most testing phases of his life since his arrival at the club as he discovered a malignant testicular tumour, ruling him out for an indefinite period.

  • Ousmane Dembele DortmundGetty

    1Ousmane Dembele | €35m | Rennes | 2016

In 2016, Borussia Dortmund splashed €35m for the then 19-year-old Dembele from Rennes.

At that time, it sounded like a very risky investment, but Dembele turned out to be one of the best wingers in the world during his stint with Dortmund.

However, fans didn't get to witness much of the Frenchman as he joined Barcelona in a humongous €105m deal with €40m in add-ons after just one year at BVB.
