‘Born once every 50 years’ - How generational talent Lamine Yamal forced Inter to ‘put three players on him’ as Barcelona wonderkid put on another Champions League masterclass

At just 17 years of age, Yamal continues to illuminate the grandest of stages. His outing against Inter was his 100th for Barca in all competitions - having made his senior breakthrough at 15.

The youngster netted another stunning goal in his latest appearance, helping Barca to a thrilling 3-3 draw with Inter that means there is still all to play for in their Champions League semi-final.

Inter coach Inzaghi told Prime Video afterwards of trying to contain the hottest of prospects: “I’ve never seen a player like Lamine Yamal in the last eight or nine years. We had to put three on him and, obviously, spaces opened up elsewhere.

“He caused us huge problems, as we had to double up the marking every time, it wasn’t enough, so by tripling up we’d leave gaps elsewhere and were forced to sit deeper.

“Fortunately, he too lost some intensity over time, as Barcelona too have played many games this season. It was a very good second half performance.”

Yamal has become the youngest player to score in a Champions League semi-final - taking that record from Real Madrid’s former Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain superstar, Kylian Mbappe.

Inzaghi, like the rest of the world, considers Yamal - who has already drawn comparisons with fellow La Masia graduate Lionel Messi - to be a generational talent. He said at his post-match press conference: “Talents like Yamal are born once every 50 years.”

Barca will need Yamal to put in another match-altering performance when heading to Milan for the second leg of their heavyweight European showdown with Inter next Tuesday. The Spanish giants are looking to make their first Champions League final since 2015.
