Bernardo Silva learns brutal Man City transfer decision with long-serving midfielder set to follow Kevin De Bruyne in being forced out of club

It has already been confirmed that Belgian midfielder De Bruyne will be leaving the Etihad Stadium as a free agent when his contract expires this summer. He has not been handed a new deal at 33 years of age.

Portuguese playmaker Silva is slightly younger than his current colleague, at 30, but is also being deemed surplus to requirements as City ready themselves for a summer rebuild under Pep Guardiola.

According to Sky Sports, City have told Silva he is no longer part of their plans. The midfielder moved to England from Monaco in 2017 and has taken in 397 appearances for the Blues - helping them to six Premier League titles alongside FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League triumphs.

Silva is said to be keen on heading back to his homeland. A return to his roots at Benfica could be agreed if City agree to a transfer fee much lower than the €58 million (£50m/$66m) release clause that exists in the Portugal international’s contract.

Clubs in the Saudi Pro League remain interested in Silva, but he is reluctant to head for the Middle East at this stage. La Liga giants Barcelona are no longer in the frame, meaning that he could retrace his steps to where it all began during the next transfer window.
