Argentina Women's World Cup 2023 squad: Who's in & who's out?

Details about the Argentina squad for the Women's World Cup 2023, including the players who may be included and those who may miss out.

Argentina will be hoping to break their group stage curse when they take the field for the 2023 Women's World Cup in July. The South American team has only qualified for the finals three times and has never made it out of the group stage.

Head coach German Portanova will rely on a mix of youth and experience to take on the giants in Women's football. They are in Group G alongside Sweden, South Africa and Italy. So far, in their nine group-stage games over three editions, Argentina are yet to win a game and have only managed to score five goals.

Argentina's form this year is promising. They have played five friendly games and have won four out of those. They will hope they can carry on with the current form and cause upsets in the group stage.

    Argentina will have the experienced gloves of Vanina Correa in goal. River Plate goalkeeper Laura Esponda and Huraca's Abigail Chaves are also available as a backup option in case Correa needs to be rested.

    Argentina's defensive record at World Cups isn't great and the veteran Correa will be eager to set it right in this edition of the tournament.

    DEFENDERS

    Argentina have historically struggled to keep their opposition from scoring goals in the World Cup finals. In the nine games they played at the World Cup, they have let in a shocking 37 goals.

    The South American team will be hoping for an improved showing this time around. Their defence is likely to be led by Leon's Sophia Braun and Madrid's Aldana Cometti, alongside Gabriela Chávez, Julieta Cruz, and Adriana Sachs. Chiara Singarella, and Érica Lonigro will be available as back-ups if needed.

    MIDFIELDERS

    Madrid CFF star Florencia Bonsegundo is the key player in midfield for Argentina. She will be supported by the talented Urquiza midfielder Daiana Falfan. Estefania Banini will be a thread from the wide areas as Argentina look to set up goals from the midfield.

    Mayorga and Larroquette are more than capable of stepping into this midfield whenever required.

    FORWARDS

    Yamila Rodriguez is the star player in the final third for Argentina. The Palmeiras forward was the top-scorer in the 2022 Copa America with six goals to her name. She will be hoping to keep that form going at the biggest stage as well.

    Eliana Stabile, Paulina Gramaglia, and Romina Nunez will be hoping to get some minutes under the belt off the bench or in case the head coach decides to give Rodriguez during the early stages of the tournament.

    EXPECTED XI

    Correa will be the undisputed first-choice in between the sticks for Argentina. She will have a four-player defensive line of Chavez, Braun, Mayorga and Stabile in front of her.

    In midfield, Bonsegundo will be supported by Falfan and Benitez, with Banini and Nunez on either flank. Up front, Rodriguez is likely to be the lone centre forward.
